Algae - the green superfood
Algae are not only delicious as seaweed in Asian and Northern European cuisine. They also contain the full range of nutrients found in the oceans. Above all, minerals such as the vital iodine, which is a deficiency in most foods that grow far from the sea, as it has been naturally washed out of the soil in this country since the last ice age. The best-known microalgae are chlorella algae and the two blue-green algae spirulina and AFA. The latter two are actually cyanobacteria, but are nevertheless usually categorised as microalgae. All three are often referred to as superfoods. Similar to plants, whose green pigment chlorophyll has a high content, they can use sunlight to transform carbon dioxide and water into nutrients (photosynthesis), releasing oxygen in the process. No less than 90 % of the oxygen produced worldwide is produced by algae in this way... Read more

Micro- and macroalgae
About 30,000 different types of algae exist. There are two types of algae: Macroalgae and microalgae. Macroalgae are also known as sea vegetables. It can be eaten in a salad, for example, served as a side dish with vegetables or used as a flavouring in the form of flakes or powder. Nori, a well-known type of seaweed, is used for sushi. Rice, vegetables and fish are wrapped in nori sheets.
Microalgae are mostly consumed (in capsule form) as a dietary supplement, but can also enrich the diet in powder form by mixing them into smoothies, shakes, dressings or doughs.
The similarities between chlorella, arthrospira and AFA
- They provide the body with a variety of bioactive vital substances in concentrated form that are readily available.
- Particularly noteworthy is the high proportion of folic acid, easily utilisable iron and, in some cases, vitamin B12.
- They are regarded as alkaline, which means that they help to control the acid-base balance.
- Their high chlorophyll content increases the oxygen content in the blood. They also have numerous other interesting effects, which are explained in our chlorophyll article in the previous link.
- Phycocyanin, the blue colouring of algae, is said to have a special immune-promoting effect (stimulation of lymphocyte activity).
- In contrast to seaweed, chlorella, spirulina and AFA contain only very small amounts or even no iodine.
