Berries - not just vitamins and minerals
In addition to the well-known, very healthy vital substances, berries also contain plenty of secondary plant substances. These also serve as a defence against pests and bacteria, as berries are very sensitive and therefore need to protect themselves well. Some of these effects can be transferred to us when we consume berries or extracts of them. Wild berries contain a wealth of secondary plant substances, especially anthocyanins (which are responsible for the dark colour, have a strong antioxidant effect and inhibit inflammation) and tannins (astringent, helpful for diarrhoea), as well as polyphenols, which protect cells, and vitamins, minerals and fibre, which strengthen the immune system, aid digestion and can reduce the risk of chronic diseases. Dark berries, especially blueberries, are particularly rich in anthocyanins... Read more

Important secondary plant substances in wild berries:
- Anthocyanins: They belong to the flavonoid group and give dark berries (e.g. blueberries and blackberries) their colour. They have a strong antioxidant (radical scavenger) and anti-inflammatory effect.
- Tanning agents (tannins): Have an astringent and haemostatic effect. Dried blueberries are traditionally used to treat diarrhoea.
- Polyphenols: A superordinate category for numerous antioxidant substances, including anthocyanins.
Additional health-promoting components
- Vitamins: High content of vitamin C as well as vitamin E, K and B vitamins.
- Minerals: Iron, magnesium and potassium.
- Fibre: Pectins support digestion and contribute to satiety.
Examples sorted by berry type:
- Blueberries: Excellent source of polyphenols, tannins and anthocyanins (the darker the more); can reduce blood pressure.
- Blackberries: High in anthocyanins, magnesium, iron and vitamin C.
- Raspberries: rich in iron, B vitamins and magnesium.
Health benefits:
- Antioxidants protect the cells.
- Promote immune defence.
- Support for digestion.
- Effect that inhibits inflammation.
- Possible protection against chronic diseases
