Vitamins
Vitamins are an essential part of a balanced diet - but why? Vitamins are micronutrients that are involved in many vital processes in the body. Some vitamins cannot be produced by the body itself, or only to a small extent. These essential vitamins must therefore be supplied through a healthy diet. A distinction is made between fat-soluble vitamins, which can be stored in fatty tissue, and water-soluble vitamins, which are excreted via the kidneys if they are too high. As these vitamins are not stored, a regular intake is particularly important... Read more

The function of vitamins
Vitamins are organic compounds that are essential for life and cannot be produced by the human body itself. They must therefore be supplied with food. A distinction is made between fat-soluble vitamins(vitamins A, D, E, K) and water-soluble vitamins(B vitamins and vitamin C). They play a crucial role in metabolism and control the activity of many enzymes.
As deficiencies are extremely detrimental to health, it is essential to compensate for them. In addition to the vitamins that the body can utilise directly, there are also provitamins (such as some carotenoids) that the body can convert into vitamins relatively easily.
No fatty acids are required for the absorption of these water-soluble vitamins from the intestine into the blood. They are absorbed in the small intestine and are usually precursors or components of enzymes. The fat-soluble vitamins A, D, E and K are very soluble in fat due to their non-polar structure, but not in water. In order to be absorbed into the body via the intestinal mucosa, they require fatty acids or the simultaneous intake of food containing fat. For this reason, these vitamins are often available in the form of oils in bottles for dripping or with a dosing pipette. However, as these drops only contain a tiny amount of cooking oil, we still recommend taking these forms together with a meal containing fat.
Note on safety when taking
Water-soluble vitamins such as vitamin C and all vitamins of the vitamin B complex are excreted via the kidneys if too much is taken. There is therefore virtually no risk of poisoning with these vitamins as they cannot accumulate in the body. The fat-soluble vitamins ADEK can be accumulated, so care must be taken to adhere to the recommended intake. Although the quantity at which it becomes dangerous is a multiple of the recommended daily intake, it is still possible to suffer damage to health if extremely high quantities are consumed.
In any case, a sensible and sensible approach should be taken; the much-loved adage "a lot helps a lot" does not apply to vitamins. In such cases, water-soluble vitamins end up as expensive urine in the toilet, while fat-soluble vitamins lead to the opposite of what is intended, namely damage to health. This is especially true for children. Poisoning due to extremely excessive intake of e.g. vitamin A or D is reported much more frequently in children than in adults.
