Lutein and zeaxanthin are carotenoids. These can be absorbed through food. Lutein is one of the most important pigments in the macula, the central area of the retina (retina of the eye). The macula lutea is a yellowish spot next to the optic nerve pupil, in the centre of which lies the fovea centralis, the area of sharpest vision. Lutein can therefore support the health of the eye and influence age-related macular degeneration (AMD).
