Defence substances from plant power - not only effective in the plant

Phytoalexins (pterostilbenes, stilbenes) are plant defence substances that protect the plant from viruses, bacteria, insects, moulds and UV light. The plant only produces large quantities of these defence substances when necessary. Today's conventionally grown vegetables, fruit and fruit varieties are sprayed with fungicides and other plant protection products, which is why the content of phytoalexins (pterostilbenes) is usually low.
In some cases, free radicals manage to evade the reaction with an enzyme or an antioxidant. British scientists have discovered that healthy cells that react with free radicals and mutate produce the CYP1B1 enzyme under certain circumstances and this enzyme then reacts with phytoalexins. As a result of this reaction, a metabolite is formed in the mutated cell. This metabolite ensures that the normal process of apoptosis is subsequently induced in the mutated cell. Apoptosis is a form of programmed cell death that occurs after the cells have lost their usefulness.

Nature seems to have thought of this process in this way. Humans have probably been consuming phytoalexins from fruits, vegetables and fruit for centuries to keep all cells healthy. Due to various innovations in agriculture and the food industry, it is advisable to supply the body with phytoalexins through food or a dietary supplement.
