Astaxanthin: High dose per capsule

Yellow to reddish pigments that occur naturally in plants and some microorganisms are carotenoids. They play a crucial role in energy transfer during photosynthesis. They also protect these organisms from the harmful effects of sunlight. Astaxanthin, a remarkable carotenoid with a bright red colour, is produced in nature by plankton, algae as well as some plants, fungi and bacteria. Astaxanthin is present in particularly high amounts in the microalga Haematococcus pluvialis (also the source of Vitals' Astamax).

Astaxanthin, which enters the food chain via algae and plankton, is responsible for the pink pigment in aquatic animals such as salmon, trout, shrimp, crab, lobster and crayfish, as well as in some birds, for example the flamingo. Astaxanthin acts for these animals as a kind of vitamin-like substance. Thanks to its unique properties, astaxanthin can occupy the ideal hydrophilic and hydrophobic position in the lipid bilayer of cell membranes as well as mitochondrial membranes.

Vitals has chosen AstaReal® from the Swedish company AstaReal, a pioneer and expert in natural astaxanthin, as its astaxanthin supplier. AstaReal is the world’s first company to have developed and produced astaxanthin from Haematococcus pluvialis. Over 40 clinical studies in humans have investigated AstaReal®. AstaReal uses an exceptional manufacturing method that ensures astaxanthin occurs in a pure form and at the highest concentrations of the best quality. AstaReal® is not a concentrated-effect dietary supplement, but is regarded as a whole food. This is because algae containing astaxanthin are harvested at the ideal time and used in full. In contrast, other (Hawaiian) production methods, where algae are cultivated in open tanks, require the astaxanthin to be extracted from the algae to prevent contamination with unwanted microorganisms.

High dose

Astamax provides at least 6 mg astaxanthin per softgel capsule — although research often recommends higher dosages; antioxidant vitamins C and E are also included.

Ingredients

Sunflower oil (Helianthus annuus), bovine gelatine (softgel capsule), Haematococcus pluvialis (green alga; contains astaxanthin), L-ascorbic acid, humectant (glycerol), stabiliser (beeswax), purified water, d-alpha-tocopherol, emulsifier (sunflower lecithin).

Recommended intake

Take 1 softgel capsule per day with water at a meal.

Manufacturer's notes

This dietary supplement is not suitable for children under 14 years of age. Do not use in combination with other products containing astaxanthin.
