Cocoa, originally from Central and South America, was already highly valued by the Mayas and Aztecs. Although today cocoa is mainly used for chocolate, the cocoa beans themselves are a natural source of various active plant substances that produce the typical bitter flavour. How much flavanol cocoa contains depends largely on where it comes from and how it has been processed. Many of these sensitive plant substances are lost during fermentation, roasting and further processing. This is why cocoa and chocolate products often contain different and rather small amounts of flavanols. In order to absorb as many of these healthy polyphenols as are contained in a capsule of cocoa flavanols-HF, you would have to eat a very large amount of dark chocolate.

Good for the blood vessels

The European Food Safety Authority (EFSA) has confirmed that cocoa flavanols are good for health because they help blood vessels to function normally. Cocoa flavanols support processes in the blood vessel walls that control whether the vessels dilate or constrict. The inner layer of the blood vessels, the endothelium, is very important. It helps in the production and action of nitric oxide (NO), a substance in the body that relaxes the blood vessels. Cocoa flavanols promote these NO processes in the endothelium. A good NO effect is crucial for supple, elastic blood vessels and normal blood circulation. Flavanols also reduce oxidative stress in the vascular walls, which supports the normal function of the endothelium.
Because of these proven effects, the EFSA has determined that 200 mg of cocoa flavanols daily maintain the elasticity of blood vessels and thus promote normal blood circulation.

CocoActiv™: a high-quality extract from cocoa beans

CocoActiv™ is a carefully produced cocoa bean extract using cocoa beans that have not been fermented or roasted, as these common steps reduce the cocoa's natural bioactive polyphenols. The majority of the fat is then removed and the flavanols are concentrated using a special extraction process. This produces an extract that contains many cocoa flavanols and preserves their natural profile. The cocoa bean extract is standardised, which means that each dose contains a consistent amount of flavanols.

CocoActiv™ has been analysed in several studies, which EFSA has used as the basis for its health claim assessment of cocoa flavanols. EFSA's controls are known to be extremely strict; even health claims on vitamins or medicinal herbs that were very well substantiated by studies were not authorised in the past. If the EFSA officially authorises a new claim, it must therefore be absolutely accurate.
