One of the most important and thoroughly researched bioflavonoids is quercetin
It is present in various foods, including apples, berries, cabbage and onions. Quercetin is a flavonol that protects plants, among other things, from insect infestation and microorganisms. Quercetin in foods is glycosidic (bound to sugar). At high temperatures quercetin partly loses its effectiveness, whether through storage, cooking or peeling. To increase daily quercetin intake, it may be useful to use an appropriate supplement. Like other bioflavonoids, quercetin is known to be poorly absorbed by the body due to its low water solubility (and thus in aqueous digestive fluids). Studies show that quercetin in a homogeneous mixture with phosphatidylcholine (in the phytosomal form) has up to 20 times higher absorption and bioavailability compared with pure quercetin.
Optimised absorption thanks to Phytosome® technology
Quercetin-PS provides quercetin from a natural source. It is derived from the flowers of the Japanese pagoda tree (Sophora japonica). The patented Phytosome® technology of the Italian manufacturer Indena has significantly improved the absorption and bioavailability of quercetin in Quercetin-PS. The term “phytosome” is composed of the Greek words “phuton” (plant) and “soma” (body). The patented manufacturing process reduces the natural clumping of certain poorly absorbable phytonutrients such as quercetin and combines them with phospholipids (phosphatidylcholine) from sunflower lecithin. The active substances are not encapsulated (as in liposomes); instead a homogeneous mixture of small, easily absorbable particles is formed. It is true that bioflavonoids (such as quercetin) have a natural affinity for phospholipids. The result is the formation of phytosomes in which the bioflavonoids adhere to the phospholipids. This allows particularly good absorption. Cell membranes (such as those of small intestinal cells) are also built from a phospholipid bilayer. This enables these phytosomes to effectively penetrate the intestinal wall and deliver the active substances into the bloodstream. Studies have demonstrated that absorption and bioavailability of quercetin are increased 10- to 20-fold by this Phytosome® technology.
Unlike liposome technology, where the active ingredient in a liposome is inside a little vesicle surrounded by a bilayer of phospholipids, the Phytosome® technology provides a true homogeneous mixture without the active ingredient being encapsulated. For this reason, the phospholipids required are significantly less compared with liposomes.

Vitals, our new brand from 2025
We are constantly on the lookout for brands that represent our ideals: highest quality, the consistent omission of unnecessary additives such as titanium dioxide or porcine gelatin, excellent value for money and absolute reliability in delivery to us and thus to our customers.
This is very difficult because such companies are extremely rare among the mass of dietary supplement manufacturers now on the market. But we have once again managed to find one with Vitals from the Netherlands!
Address of the manufacturer: Vitals Voedingssupplementen BV, Pieter Lieftinckweg 29, 1505 HX Zaandam, Netherlands. E-mail: kundendienst@vitals.eu.
