R‑lipoic acid, also called alpha‑lipoic acid, is a sulphur‑containing, vitamin‑like fatty acid. Because it is both water‑ and fat‑soluble, alpha‑lipoic acid can exert its beneficial effects within cell interiors and membranes, in the blood and even in the brain. This essential fatty acid is produced by the body and is also obtained from the diet. As it is found mainly in animal products (particularly in red meat), diets that avoid these products can lead to reduced intake. This can affect, for example, athletes, vegans or vegetarians.
