Tocopherols and Tocotrienols
Tocotrienols have a markedly higher effect as antioxidants compared with tocopherols, which are commonly added to vitamin E supplements.
Tocotrienols differ from the vitamin E tocopherols only in the side chain. While the side chains of the vitamin E tocopherols are fully saturated, tocotrienols have a side chain containing three double bonds. These unsaturated double bonds lead to a considerably higher protective activity in the tocotrienols. Tocotrienol is more agile; it can therefore rotate and move within the cell membrane and move from one membrane to another. This offers a considerable benefit to the human body because a tocotrienol molecule can protect multiple membranes within a cell.
Over the past 10 years, scientific studies have reported health-protective properties of tocotrienols that are not found in tocopherols. A 40-fold higher antioxidant protective effect against lipid peroxidation at cell membranes has been demonstrated for tocotrienols.
