Tocopherols and tocotrienols
What is the difference? Tocotrienols have a much greater antioxidant effect than tocopherols, which are usually added to vitamin E supplements.
Tocotrienols differ from vitamin E tocopherols only in the side chain. While the side chains of vitamin E tocopherols are completely saturated, tocotrienols have a triple unsaturated side chain. These unsaturated double bonds lead to a significantly higher protective activity in tocotrienols. Tocotrienol is more agile and can therefore turn and move in the cell membrane and move beyond one cell membrane into other cell membranes. This results in a considerable benefit for the human body, because one tocotrienol can protect the space of different membranes of a cell.
In the last 10 years, scientific studies have reported health-protective properties of tocotrienols that are not found in tocopherols. Tocotrienols have been shown to have a 40-fold higher antioxidant protective effect against lipid peroxidation on cell membranes.
