What is L-tryptophan?

L-tryptophan is an essential amino acid and a natural component of proteins. As the human body cannot produce it itself, it must be obtained regularly through the diet.

Compared with many other amino acids, L-tryptophan occurs in foods only in relatively small amounts. Good natural sources are primarily protein-rich foods such as meat, fish, eggs and dairy products. With a vegetarian or vegan diet, as well as an overall low-protein diet, intake may be correspondingly lower.

In human metabolism, L-tryptophan serves as a precursor to serotonin. Melatonin can subsequently be formed from serotonin. These biochemical relationships are well documented scientifically. However, as an amino acid, L-tryptophan is not covered by the authorised health claims of the EU. Therefore, health-related claims may not be made for food supplements containing L-tryptophan.

For product quality, purity and origin play a decisive role. High-quality L-tryptophan is produced by fermentation from maize and contains exclusively the natural L-form. Production is carried out without animal starting materials and allows for a vegan product with transparent origin and clear labelling.
