Folic acid in the highest-quality form 5-MHTF for optimal absorption
Vegan and free from additives. 5-MTHF is the form of folic acid that occurs in the human body. This means that "regular" folic acid must first be converted by the body into 5-MHTF before our organism can use it.
On the one hand, it seems logical to take folic acid directly as 5-MTHF, i.e. in the form we need it. On the other hand, there are people who depend on this form of intake because their bodies cannot convert folic acid to MHTF. The cause is usually a genetic defect.
According to Pharmazeutische Zeitung online (Issue 11/2009), this affects, for example, every second woman. It was already discovered in 1995 by P. Frosst et al. (see study: A candidate genetic risk factor for vascular disease: a common mutation in methylenetetrahydrofolate reductase, Nature Genetics 10, 111–113 (1995)). For the people affected, it would therefore make no sense to take "regular" folic acid supplements.
Folic acid from food is also unusable for those affected unless it is present as 5-MTHF.
For further questions, you should consult your doctor or pharmacist, even if you want to undergo such a genetic test. If that is too time-consuming, simply take 5-MHTF instead of "regular" folic acid, because it will be utilised optimally by everyone, whether with or without the genetic defect!
