Folic acid in its highest-quality form, 5-MHTF, for optimal absorption
Vegan and free from additives. 5-MTHF is the form of folic acid found naturally in the human body. This means that even ‘normal’ folic acid must first be converted by the body into 5-MTHF before our bodies can utilise it.
On the one hand, it seems logical to consume folic acid directly as 5-MTHF – that is, in the form we actually need. On the other hand, there are people who rely on this form because their bodies cannot convert folic acid into 5-MTHF. This is usually caused by a genetic defect.
According to the online edition of the *Pharmazeutische Zeitung* (issue 11/2009), this affects one in two women, for example. It was first discovered as early as 1995 by P. Frosst et al. (see study: A candidate genetic risk factor for vascular disease: a common mutation in methylenetetrahydrofolate reductase, Nature Genetics 10, 111–113 (1995)). It would therefore be pointless for those affected to take ‘normal’ folic acid supplements.
Nor can the folic acid in food be utilised by those affected, unless it is present as 5-MTHF.
If you have any further questions, you should consult your doctor or pharmacist, including if you wish to undergo such a genetic test. If that seems too much of a hassle, simply take 5-MTHF instead of ‘normal’ folic acid, as this is utilised optimally by everyone, regardless of whether they have a genetic defect or not!
