Lutein & Zeaxanthin – Antioxidant carotenoids for the eyes
Lutein and zeaxanthin are natural carotenoids with antioxidant properties. They are found particularly in the retina and the macula of the human eye, where they form what is known as the macular pigment. Among other things, this helps to filter high-energy blue light.
Each capsule contains 10 mg of lutein and 1 mg of zeaxanthin. The recommended daily dose provides 20 mg of lutein and 2 mg of zeaxanthin – in a ratio typical of that found in the macula.
Retina, macula and blue light
Blue light is a high-energy component of visible light and originates from both natural sunlight and digital screens and LED lighting. It can penetrate deep into the eye.
Lutein and zeaxanthin are natural components of the macular pigment and help to filter blue light. Both carotenoids are the focus of scientific research regarding their importance for the eye’s tissues.
- Lutein is distributed throughout the retina.
- Zeaxanthin is concentrated primarily in the central area of the retina, the macula.
Natural intake through diet
As the human body cannot produce lutein and zeaxanthin itself, they must be obtained through the diet or via dietary supplements. Natural sources include spinach, kale, sweetcorn and other green leafy vegetables.
A regular intake helps to maintain the levels of these carotenoids in the body.
Regulatory note: No health claims for lutein and zeaxanthin are currently authorised by the EFSA.
