Quality is key.

Vitamin B12 (cobalamin) was only discovered in 1948. It is a very complex, large molecule and is essential for the development of all the body’s cells. Nerve cells in particular suffer from a deficiency. The best-selling form of B12 is the cheap cyanocobalamin. Whilst this is effective, it is not ideal, as it must first be converted before it can be absorbed. This process releases the potentially harmful cyanide compound (better known as hydrocyanic acid).
Methylcobalamin is the form required by the body and is absorbed much more effectively without the need for conversion.

Who needs to ensure they get enough vitamin B12?

Vegans, and in some cases vegetarians who do not consume milk or eggs, must ensure they have an adequate supply of vitamin B12. Vitamin B12 is absorbed in the large intestine. However, a significant proportion is also produced by the bacteria in the large intestine.
People with chronic bowel conditions (ulcerative colitis, Crohn’s disease) must therefore pay close attention to their vitamin B12 intake, as must people who have had their large bowel removed (e.g. following bowel cancer surgery).
A key advantage of B12 in spray form is that, as it is administered as a spray into the mouth, a large proportion of the vitamin B12 is absorbed immediately via the oral mucosa.
