Vitamin D for healthy bones and a well-functioning immune system
EnergyBalance's Vitamin D2 (Ergocalciferol) is obtained from inactive yeast (Saccharomyces Cerevisiae). As it occurs in a form similar to that found in food, the body can easily recognise and absorb it. This inactive yeast, which contains no living cells and cannot ferment, is also safe for people with yeast allergies. Vitamin D is particularly important for healthy bones, as it regulates calcium levels, and for muscle function, which is why it is also recommended for older people. This vitamin, whose levels are often low in northern countries during winter, is also crucial for a functioning immune system. One capsule covers the entire Swiss daily requirement; in the EU up to 3 or 5 capsules may be taken.
Current note on dosage
The reference values for adults for vitamin D were raised sharply years ago by the DGE, from 5 µg to 20 µg!
Accordingly, one capsule therefore contains 100% of the daily requirement according to the DGE.
However, because the scientifically outdated nutrition labelling regulation still applies to online shops, we have to state 400% in our nutrition table!
Here is the current DGE recommendation from 2012!
According to the DGE, adolescents and adults obtain only 2 to 4 µg of vitamin D per day from food. Thus the estimated intake is far from being reached. The “rest” (around 16 to 18 µg of vitamin D) must be covered by the consumer via vitamin D synthesis in the skin – i.e. by frequent time outdoors.
People who spend a lot of time outdoors (athletes, postal workers, forestry workers, dog owners …) are therefore likely to meet their vitamin D needs 'naturally'.
People who cannot do this (office workers, catering staff, seniors with limited mobility, bedridden people, couch potatoes …) are well advised to have their vitamin D level checked at their GP during the next lab check and to correct any deficiency. Diseases caused by vitamin D deficiency are diverse and can be serious.
Nutritional properties
- Vitamin D contributes to the normal absorption/utilisation of calcium and phosphorus.
- Vitamin D contributes to a normal calcium level in the blood.
- Vitamin D contributes to the maintenance of normal bones and teeth.
- Vitamin D contributes to the maintenance of normal muscle function.
- Vitamin D contributes to the normal function of the immune system.
- Vitamin D has a role in cell division.

*Reference value according to Regulation (EU) No. 1169/2011
Please note: In Switzerland the reference value is 20 µg, which is why this value is shown on the tin as 100% of the intake. In the EU the absolutely outdated reference value of 5 µg has applied for decades, so for an EU shop we correctly state this as 400%! Scientifically wrong, but bureaucratically correct — we don't want to run afoul of ultra-modern EU law....
