Vitamin D for healthy bones and a strong immune system
EnergyBalance’s Vitamin D2 (ergocalciferol) is derived from inactive yeast (Saccharomyces cerevisiae). As it is in a form similar to that found in food, the body can easily recognise it and absorb it effectively. This inactive yeast, which contains no living cells and cannot ferment, is also safe for people with yeast allergies. Vitamin D is particularly important for healthy bones, as it regulates calcium levels, and for muscle function, which is why it is also recommended for older people. This vitamin, levels of which are often low in northern countries during winter, is also crucial for a properly functioning immune system. One capsule covers the entire Swiss daily requirement ; in the EU, up to 3 or 5 capsules may be taken.
Current note on dosage
The reference values for adults for vitamin D were significantly increased
years ago by the DGE, from 5 µg to 20 µg!
As such, one capsule therefore contains 100 per cent of the daily requirement according to the DGE.
However, as online shops are still subject to the scientifically
outdated Nutrition Labelling Regulation, we are obliged to
state 400 per cent in our nutrition table!
Here is the current DGE recommendation from
2012!
According to the DGE, adolescents and adults consume only 2
to 4 µg of vitamin D per day through their diet. This falls far short of
the estimated intake requirement. The ‘remainder’ (around 16 to 18 µg
of vitamin D) must be covered by the consumer through vitamin D synthesis in the
skin – that is, by spending plenty of time outdoors.
People who spend a lot of time outdoors (athletes,
postmen, forestry workers, dog owners, etc.) should therefore be able to meet their
vitamin D requirements ‘naturally’.
People who are unable to do so (office workers,
catering staff, older people with limited mobility,
bedridden patients, couch potatoes …) would be well advised to
have their
vitamin D levels checked and, if deficient, to
replenish them. Illnesses caused by vitamin D deficiency are varied
and could be serious.

*Reference value according to Regulation (EU) No 1169/2011
Please note: In Switzerland, the reference value is 20
µg, which is why this value is stated on the tin as 100% of the recommended intake
. In the EU, the completely outdated
reference value of 5 µg has been in use for decades; therefore, to be accurate for an
EU shop, we state this as 400 % here! Scientifically incorrect, but
bureaucratically correct – after all, we don’t want to contravene the ultra-modern
EU legislation....
