Oestradiol is the main antagonist of progesterone and testosterone

The principal representative of the oestrogens (oestrone [E1], oestradiol [E2] and oestriol [E3]) is the biologically active (most potent) oestradiol. Oestradiol is produced in the ovaries, the placenta, the adrenal cortices and the testes or by conversion from androgen precursors (testosterone). Oestradiol is responsible for the development of secondary sexual characteristics (breast development, fat distribution) and reproductive function. In women, oestradiol also builds up tissue and influences the female body silhouette. Oestradiol falls significantly in women after the menopause, which can trigger numerous complaints.
