Laboratory analysis to determine the concentration of vitamin B12 in urine

Vitamin B12, as one of the B vitamins, is involved in a wide range of important processes in the body. It contributes to normal energy metabolism, normal functioning of the nervous system, normal mental function and normal functioning of the immune system. Vitamin B12 is found predominantly in animal products; therefore, people following a plant-based diet in particular should ensure they have an adequate intake. As the vitamin is absorbed through the wall of the small intestine, people with chronic bowel problems are also advised to ensure they have an adequate intake. 

A simple urine test followed by laboratory analysis can determine whether a vitamin B12 deficiency is present. The Medivere Vitamin B12 Urine Test analyses methylmalonic acid levels. Methylmalonic acid is an indirect indicator of a vitamin B12 deficiency. If there is too little vitamin B12 in the body, there is an increased release of this acid.
