With Saccharomyces boulardii, an active microbiotic
The name “Saccharomyces boulardii” is derived from the microbiologist Henri Boulard, who discovered this yeast species in 1920 in Indochina during a cholera epidemic. He noticed there that the locals liked to drink lychee tea for protection. In his investigations he then came across this particular yeast, which occurs on the skins of the lychee fruit.
Another name used synonymously, and corresponding more to the scientific nomenclature, is Saccharomyces cerevisiae Hansen CBS 5926 desiccatus.
Further information is easily found on the internet, for which it is better to search for Saccharomyces cerevisiae Hansen CBS 5926 desiccatus. Searching for “Saccharomyces boulardii” mainly brings up advertisements and more trivial explanations at first. The less commonly used, but among scientists the more usual name “Saccharomyces cerevisiae Hansen CBS 5926 desiccatus” immediately yields useful results.
