Methylfolate is a form of folate. As it does not first need to be
converted from folic acid by the body, it is absorbed directly by the body without
digestion and is therefore particularly valuable.
For some people, this is essential because their bodies cannot
convert folic acid into MHTF.
According to Pharmazeutische Zeitung online (issue 11/2009),
this genetic defect affects, for example, one in two women. It was discovered
as early as 1995 by P. Frosst et al. (Source: A candidate genetic
risk factor for vascular disease: a common mutation in
methylenetetrahydrofolate reductase, Nature Genetics 10, 111–113
(1995)). For those affected, it would therefore make no sense
to take ‘normal’ folic acid supplements.
Nor can they utilise the folic acid in their diet,
unless it is present as 5-MTHF.
If you have any further questions, you should consult your doctor or pharmacist,
even if you are considering having such a genetic test
carried out. If that seems too much of a hassle, simply take
5-MTHF instead of ‘normal’ folic acid, as this is utilised optimally
by everyone, regardless of whether they have a genetic defect or not!
