This essential vitamin is a member of the B-vitamin family. Like almost all B vitamins, pantothenic acid is water-soluble and is not stored by the body; it must therefore be obtained daily from food.
The body needs pantothenic acid for this.
Working in conjunction with other B vitamins, pantothenic acid fulfils a wide range of metabolic functions in the body. In its active form, as coenzyme A, it is of fundamental importance for energy production in all cells and tissues.
Vitamin B5 can make the following scientifically proven contributions to health:
- normal energy metabolism and normal mental performance, reduction of tiredness and fatigue
- normal synthesis and metabolism of steroid hormones, vitamin D and certain neurotransmitters
Examples of the importance of pantothenic acid in the body
- Vitamin B5 is involved in the synthesis of sex hormones, cortisol, bile acids and haemoglobin, the red blood pigment.
- The production of the important neurotransmitter acetylcholine also depends on an optimal intake of pantothenic acid.
- Pantothenic acid is used in the regeneration of the skin and mucous membranes and is therefore also found in numerous wound ointments.
When is there a risk of vitamin B5 deficiency?
The body’s requirement for vitamin B5 is normally met through animal and plant-based foods. A deficiency may arise in the event of malabsorption in the gut, for example due to inflammation.
Increased consumption of vitamin B5 can be observed, amongst other things, during prolonged periods of stress, in cases of severe liver and kidney disease, and as a result of the consumption of recreational substances (particularly alcohol).
