The essential vitamin is a member of the B-vitamin family. Like almost all B vitamins, pantothenic acid is water-soluble and is not stored by the body, so it must be taken in daily with food.
Why the body needs pantothenic acid.
Pantothenic acid fulfils a variety of metabolic functions in the body in conjunction with other B vitamins. In its active form, as coenzyme A, it is of fundamental importance for the energy production of all cells and tissues.
Vitamin B5 can contribute the following scientifically proven benefits for health:
- normal energy-yielding metabolism and normal mental performance, reduction of tiredness and fatigue
- normal synthesis and normal metabolism of steroid hormones, vitamin D and some neurotransmitters
Examples of the importance of pantothenic acid in the body
- Vitamin B5 is involved in the synthesis of sex hormones, cortisol, bile acids as well as haemoglobin, the red blood pigment.
- The formation of the important neurotransmitter acetylcholine also depends on an adequate supply of pantothenic acid.
- Pantothenic acid is consumed during the regeneration of skin and mucous membranes and is therefore included in numerous wound ointments.
When is there a risk of a vitamin B5 deficiency?
The requirement for vitamin B5 is normally met through animal and plant foods. A deficiency situation can occur with absorption disorders in the intestine, for example in the case of inflammation.
An increased consumption of vitamin B5 can be observed, among other things, during prolonged periods of stress, in severe liver and kidney diseases and through the use of recreational drugs (especially alcohol).

Natur Vital pantothenic acid contains a relatively large amount of vitamin B5, which is not a problem even for people without an increased requirement. Both the EU (1) and Switzerland therefore do not specify an upper limit value for pantothenic acid.
