Alpha-lipoic acid – a versatile compound for cells & metabolism
Alpha-lipoic acid (ALA) is a sulphur-containing fatty acid that the human body produces in small amounts and can also be obtained from the diet. It is regarded as a versatile antioxidant because it is soluble in both water and fat, enabling it to reach nearly all body cells.... Read more

Effects and Characteristics
- Antioxidant effect: ALA protects cells and tissues from harmful free radicals. Because it can regenerate other antioxidants such as vitamins C and E, glutathione and coenzyme Q10, it is also referred to as the 'antioxidant of antioxidants'.
- Support for metabolism: It is crucial for converting glucose into energy in the mitochondria.
- Protective functions: Due to its properties, alpha-lipoic acid can cross the blood-brain barrier and protect nerve cells. It is also credited with a supporting role in detoxification, particularly in binding heavy metals.
- Improved energy utilisation: Studies show that this substance can increase fat burning in cells.
Dosage and Quality
In dietary supplements, 100 mg to 300 mg is usually recommended to support metabolism. From a daily dose of 600 mg, alpha-lipoic acid shows clear medical effects. Therefore, dietary supplements are not allowed to contain more than 599 mg of alpha-lipoic acid; otherwise they are not legal. A look on Google shows that many manufacturers do not adhere to this. In our shop you will only find legal alpha-lipoic acid.
The difference between R-alpha-lipoic acid and S-alpha-lipoic acid
Normally alpha-lipoic acid preparations always consist of a mixture of 50% R-alpha-lipoic acid and 50% S-alpha-lipoic acidHere is the difference:
R-alpha-lipoic acid (R-ALA):
- It is natural. Your body produces it itself. It is also found in foods.
- It is more effective. Your body absorbs it much better. It also uses it more effectively.
- It is active. It can generate energy directly in your cells. It also protects your cells.
S-alpha-lipoic acid (S-ALA):
- It is artificial. It is produced during manufacturing in the laboratory. It is often present in typical ALA blends.
- It is less effective. Your body cannot use it as well as the R-form.
In summary: R-alpha-lipoic acid is the natural form. The body can use it directly.
Pure R-alpha-lipoic acid usually works better. However, it is often more expensive.
