In the clear, cold waters of the Antarctic lives krill, a small crustacean that feeds on phytoplankton. Its position at the beginning of the food chain minimises the risk of accumulation of hazardous contaminants. Krill is the main food source for many marine animals, particularly whales and penguins. Its biomass, according to current knowledge, is larger than that of any other animal species on our planet. The annual catch has remained steady for years at around 0.03% of the total biomass. Only 1% of the krill caught is used for health products such as dietary supplements, functional foods and biological medicinal products.

Marine life is a rich source of valuable omega-3 fatty acids. In the oil of Antarctic krill they remain bound in a biological matrix that is unique in its effectiveness. The oil obtained by a patented specialised process (Pure NKO®) contains, in addition to the important omega-3 fatty acids DHA (docosahexaenoic acid) and EPA (eicosapentaenoic acid), the red pigment astaxanthin, which belongs to the carotenoids and has powerful antioxidant properties.

Due to the gentle cold extraction, in NKO® krill oil the omega-3 fatty acids and the astaxanthin remain bound to phospholipids, exactly as they naturally occur in krill. This favours their absorption in the body. Krill oil is also rich in phosphatidylcholine, a phospholipid which provides choline, an essential constituent of the brain's neurotransmitters. Overall, Neptune krill oil offers a favourable ratio of omega-3, -6 and -9 fatty acids.

What you should know:
Not all krill oils are the same.
