Spirulina belongs to the genus of cyanobacteria and is counted among the oldest primordial forms of life that still exist unchanged on Earth. As a photosynthetic organism, spirulina was one of the first life forms involved in the formation of the oxygen atmosphere and is part of the branch of evolution from which plants subsequently developed. Algae were the prerequisite and the forerunner for the later emergence of the enormous diversity of oxygen-dependent life forms and they ensure their continued existence. An estimated 90% of the oxygen in the Earth's atmosphere is produced by algae, only 10% by the remainder of the plant world. Thus algae are also the most efficient CO2 consumers.
