Semi-essential amino acid
There are approximately 500 amino acids that occur naturally. 20
of these amino acids act as building blocks for protein in the
human body and are referred to as ‘essential amino acids’
. These amino acids are classified into the
groups ‘essential’, ‘semi-essential’ and ‘non-essential’
.
L-carnitine is one of the so-called semi-essential
amino acids. This means that the body is able to produce
some of these amino acids itself, whilst it relies on
dietary sources for the rest in order to meet its daily
requirements. In food, it is found mainly
in (red) meat and, to a much lesser extent, in
plant-based foods. Acetyl-L-carnitine
(ALCAR for short) is an acetylated form of
carnitine. Carnitine is synthesised in the liver, kidneys and
brain from the amino acids lysine and methionine,
with vitamin C, iron, vitamin B6 and niacin acting as cofactors
. Depending on requirements, carnitine can be converted into acetyl-L-carnitine
and vice versa.
The advantage of supplementing with acetyl-L-carnitine compared to L-carnitine is that it crosses the blood-brain barrier more easily.

This is very difficult because such companies are extremely rare among the mass of manufacturers of food supplements that are now on the market. But we have managed to find them again, with Vitals from the Netherlands!
