Semi-essential amino acid
There are approximately 500 amino acids that occur in nature. 20 of these amino acids serve as building blocks for protein in the human body and are referred to as "proteinogenic amino acids". These amino acids are classified into the groups "essential", "semi-essential" and "non-essential".
L-carnitine is one of the so-called semi-essential amino acids. This means that the body is able to produce part of these amino acids itself, while it depends on food for the remainder to meet daily needs. In foods it is found mainly in (red) meat and to a much lesser extent in plant foods. Acetyl-L-carnitine (short: ALCAR) is an acetylated form of carnitine. Carnitine is synthesised in the liver, kidneys and brain from the amino acids lysine and methionine, with vitamin C, iron, vitamin B6 and niacin acting as cofactors. Depending on requirements, carnitine can be converted into acetyl-L-carnitine and vice versa.
The advantage of supplementing with acetyl-L-carnitine compared with L-carnitine is that it crosses the blood–brain barrier more easily.
