Astaxanthin: High dose per capsule
Carotenoids are yellow to reddish pigments that occur naturally in plants and some microorganisms. They play a crucial role in energy transfer during photosynthesis. They also protect these organisms from the harmful effects of sunlight. Astaxanthin, a remarkable carotenoid with a bright red colour, is produced naturally by plankton, algae and certain plants, fungi and bacteria. Astaxanthin is found in particularly high concentrations in the microalgae Haematococcus pluvialis (which is also the source of Vitals’ Astamax).
Astaxanthin, which enters the food chain via algae and plankton, is responsible for the pink-red pigment found in aquatic animals such as salmon, trout, prawns, crabs, lobsters and crayfish, as well as in some birds, such as flamingos. Astaxanthin acts as a kind of vitamin-like substance for these animals. Thanks to its unique properties, astaxanthin can occupy the ideal hydrophilic and hydrophobic position within the lipid bilayer of cell membranes and mitochondrial membranes.
Vitals has selected AstaReal® from the Swedish company AstaReal, a pioneer and expert in natural astaxanthin, as its astaxanthin supplier. AstaReal is the world’s first company to have developed and produced astaxanthin from Haematococcus pluvialis. Over 40 clinical trials in humans are currently investigating AstaReal®. AstaReal utilises an exceptional manufacturing process that ensures astaxanthin is present in its purest form, at the highest concentrations and of the very best quality. AstaReal® is not a concentrated dietary supplement, but is regarded as a whole food. This is because algae containing astaxanthin are harvested at the ideal time and utilised in their entirety. In contrast, with other (Hawaiian) production methods, where algae are cultivated in open tanks, the astaxanthin must be extracted from the algae to prevent contamination with undesirable microorganisms.
High dose
Each Astamax softgel capsule provides at least 6 mg of astaxanthin – even though research often recommends higher doses; it also contains the antioxidants vitamin C and vitamin E.
