Blood lipids are fats that are transported in the blood to their target tissues. They consist mainly of cholesterol and triglycerides. The outer layer of a lipoprotein consists of a coat of water-soluble proteins (apolipoproteins) and phospholipids. The particle contains cholesterol and triglycerides. The best-known lipoproteins are high-density lipoprotein (HDL) and low-density lipoprotein (LDL) cholesterol. Lipid metabolism is a complex subject, but put simply, LDL cholesterol transports cholesterol from the liver to the body’s cells, whilst HDL cholesterol carries cholesterol back from the body’s cells to the liver. It is important for good health that the levels of the various blood lipids remain within the normal range. There are numerous options available for maintaining healthy cholesterol levels.
