Choline – a (vitamin B-like) nutrient that has long been underestimated
But this is increasingly changing. In 2012, the European Commission decided that three health claims for choline could be considered scientifically substantiated. It was established that it is important for normal fat metabolism, normal homocysteine metabolism and a properly functioning liver. And in 2016, the European Food Safety Authority (EFSA) ruled that choline is an essential nutrient which the body cannot and which must therefore be obtained largely through the diet . The adequate intake in Europe has been set at 400 mg per day for adults, based on the average intake in European countries. For pregnant women, 480 mg per day is recommended, and for breastfeeding women as much as 520 mg per day. In 2016, an adequate intake was also established for the first time in America. However, this is based on clinical studies conducted specifically to determine the daily requirement (sufficient for a healthy liver) and which yielded a value of 550 mg per day. The average intake among adults in Europe varies between 291 and 468 mg per day.
As a component of phospholipids (phosphatidylcholine and sphingomyelin), choline is an important component of cell membranes. It also plays a role in fat metabolism: the choline derivative phosphatidylcholine is a component of VLDL cholesterol and is involved in the conversion and removal of fats from the liver. Choline is therefore important for a well-functioning and healthy liver. Furthermore, it is required for the formation of betaine, which in turn acts as a methyl donor in the remethylation of homocysteine in the liver. Normal homocysteine metabolism helps to maintain normal blood levels of homocysteine.
Synergy
Choline interacts with vitamins B6, B12, folate and SAMe. Furthermore, phosphatidylcholine, which is produced via the SAMe-dependent metabolic pathway, is enriched with DHA to form phosphatidylcholine-DHA. Choline and DHA work synergistically together.

Vitals, our new brand from 2025
We are constantly on the lookout for brands that represent our ideals: The highest quality, consistent omission of superfluous additives such as titanium dioxide or porcine gelatine, very good value for money and absolute reliability in delivery to us and therefore also to customers.
This is very difficult because such companies are extremely rare among the mass of manufacturers of food supplements that are now on the market. But we have managed to find them again, with Vitals from the Netherlands!
Manufacturer's address: Vitals Voedingssupplementen BV, Pieter Lieftinckweg 29, 1505 HX Zaandam, Netherlands. E-mail: customer service@vitals.eu.
