Choline - a nutrient long underestimated (vitamin B-like)

But that has been changing. In 2012 the European Commission decided that three health claims for choline may be considered scientifically proven. It was found to be important for normal fat metabolism, normal homocysteine metabolism and a well-functioning liver. And in 2016 the European Food Safety Authority (EFSA) concluded that choline is an essential nutrient that the body cannot produce in sufficient amounts and must largely be obtained from the diet. The adequate intake in Europe was set at 400 mg per day for adults, based on average intakes in European countries. For pregnant women 480 mg/day is recommended, and for breastfeeding women even 520 mg per day. In 2016 an adequate intake was also established in the US for the first time. This, however, is based on clinical studies specifically conducted to determine the daily requirement (sufficient for a healthy liver) and resulted in a value of 550 mg per day. Average intakes among adults in Europe range between 291 and 468 mg per day.

Choline, as a component of phospholipids (phosphatidylcholine and sphingomyelin), is an important component of cell membranes. It also plays a role in fat metabolism: the choline derivative phosphatidylcholine is a component of VLDL cholesterol and is involved in the conversion and export of fats from the liver. Choline is therefore important for a well-functioning and healthy liver. In addition, it is required for the formation of betaine, which in turn acts as a methyl donor in the remethylation of homocysteine in the liver. A normal homocysteine metabolism contributes to the maintenance of a normal blood homocysteine level.

Synergy

Choline interacts with vitamins B6, B12, folate and SAMe. Furthermore, phosphatidylcholine produced via the SAMe-dependent metabolic pathway is enriched with DHA, forming phosphatidylcholine-DHA. Choline and DHA act synergistically.
