Collagen Formula Pro for Cartilage
Collagen Formula Pro is the result of the search for the highest quality and best supported forms of collagen. It contains non-denatured collagen types I, V and X from the eggshell membrane (Ovomet®) as well as non-denatured type II collagen (UC-II®). The formula includes Ester-C®, a superior form of vitamin C that is important for collagen production and benefits cartilage. These ingredients form an effective trio whose components complement each other exceptionally well.
Collagen
The word collagen derives from the Greek κoλλώ and means “to bind together”. Collagen fibres are the most important proteins in the human body outside the cells, providing structure, strength, cohesion and elasticity. Various types of supportive tissue, such as connective tissue, cartilage and bone, contain collagen fibres. Collagen can occur in up to 28 different types. The most common form of collagen in the human body is type I. It is found, for example, in tendons, ligaments and bone tissue. Collagen types II, V and X are more specialised and occur in smaller amounts in specific areas. For example, cartilage is composed predominantly of type II, with a small amount of type X present as well. The structure of all collagen types is identical. Collagen fibres consist of bundles of collagen fibrils, which are made up of strands of collagen molecules (see figure). These molecules are composed of three protein chains arranged in a specific triple helix structure. Because collagen is not of plant origin, animal collagen is always used for dietary supplements.
Non-denatured type II collagen
Collagen Formula Pro contains non-denatured type II collagen (from chicken cartilage) under the brand name UC-II®. The well-known American supplier Interhealth produces this collagen. Interhealth has invested considerable resources in the scientific validation of this product. Several human studies with UC-II® have been conducted and have produced positive results. A significant distinguishing feature of UC-II® is that it is a “non-denatured” form of type II collagen. This means that the collagen contained in the product is still in its original form and retains the same spatial (helix) structure that the body can recognise. By contrast, there is denatured type II collagen offered as a dietary supplement. The collagen there is processed by hydrolysis (a chemical reaction with water that splits the collagen into smaller peptides). This alters the spatial structure of the molecule, which is disadvantageous. By comparison, the daily dose for UC-II® with non-denatured type II collagen is only 40 mg, whereas denatured type II collagen typically requires several grams.
Eggshell membrane
Inside an egg there is a thin membrane that is full of nutrients and serves to develop and protect the chick. When eggs are normally consumed, this membrane is usually lost because it is attached to the eggshell. The Spanish manufacturer of Ovomet®, Eggnovo, has found a meaningful use for chicken eggshells that would normally be considered a waste product. The membrane is separated from the inside of the egg by a natural process based on water extraction and prepared for use in dietary supplements. Thanks to this gentle manufacturing process, the beneficial properties of the eggshell membrane, including the spatial structure of the collagen present, are preserved. Ovomet® contains, among other things, a large amount of robust, non-denatured type I collagen. In addition, it contains non-denatured collagen types V and X. Ovomet® is a genuine natural product and therefore also contains other constituents such as elastin (approx. 20%), hyaluronic acid (approx. 4%), glucosamine (approx. 2%), chondroitin (approx. 2%), keratin (approx. 1%), lysozyme (approx. 1%) and over 500 different proteins. Several human studies have also been conducted with Ovomet®.
Vitamin C
Collagen Formula Pro contains vitamin C in the form of Ester-C®. This patented raw material is vitamin C in the non-acidic form of calcium ascorbate. It also contains some natural metabolites of vitamin C, such as threonic acid, which makes Ester-C® unique. Ester-C® offers advantages such as faster absorption in the body and longer retention compared with regular vitamin C in the form of ascorbic acid. Therefore it takes effect over a longer period and a lower dose is sufficient. The various health-promoting effects of vitamin C are well documented in the scientific literature. This collagen formula is ideal for vitamin C, as it, among other things, contributes to normal collagen formation. Three different enzymes involved in collagen production require vitamin C as a cofactor. These three enzymes promote the addition of a hydroxyl group (OH) to the amino acids L-lysine and L-proline, which are components of the collagen molecule, to stabilise the characteristic triple helix structure of collagen. Regular collagen formation is, among other things, important for cartilage to be formed and maintained and for bone tissue to be assembled and for all of this to function normally.
Nutritional properties
- Vitamin C contributes to normal collagen formation for the normal function of cartilage.
- Vitamin C plays a role in bone formation.

Vitals, our new brand from 2025
We are constantly on the lookout for brands that represent our ideals: highest quality, the consistent omission of unnecessary additives such as titanium dioxide or porcine gelatin, excellent value for money and absolute reliability in delivery to us and thus to our customers.
This is very difficult because such companies are extremely rare among the mass of dietary supplement manufacturers now on the market. But we have once again managed to find one with Vitals from the Netherlands!
Address of the manufacturer: Vitals Voedingssupplementen BV, Pieter Lieftinckweg 29, 1505 HX Zaandam, Netherlands. E-mail: kundendienst@vitals.eu.
