Jeden Tag 50+ specifically for men and women over 50
As we age, the body's nutrient requirements change. Therefore the need for iron and copper decreases. For this reason Jeden Tag 50+ contains neither iron nor copper. It is important for men and women at this age to take additional vitamin B12 and sufficient folic acid (folate) to support, among other things, mental functions and memory. Larger amounts of vitamins K2 and D3 are also important for this age group.
B vitamins in the ideal form and dosage
Jeden Tag 50+ provides 50 μg vitamin B12 in the biologically active forms methylcobalamin and adenosylcobalamin. These are of substantially better quality than the commonly used cheap cyanocobalamin.
It also contains 300 μg active folic acid in the best form, 5-methyltetrahydrofolate. About 50% of people cannot utilise the simple folic acid contained in many supplements and medications because their metabolism cannot convert it into the active folate form the body needs. 5-MTHF is already converted and can therefore be used without problems by these people.
High-dosed vitamin D3 and K2
Calcium is positioned in the right place in the bone by the action of vitamin K. This is particularly important for this age group. Jeden Tag 50+ provides 45 μg K1 (phytomenadione) and at least 90 μg vitamin K2. Vitamin D is also important for the bones, but its spectrum of action is much broader: among other things it has positive effects on resilience, muscle function and normal cell division. Therefore one tablet contains a high dose of 35 μg vitamin D3, as vitamin D is of great importance and has numerous positive properties.
Support for eye health and special additions
Furthermore, Jeden Tag 50+ contains vitamins A and B2 as well as zinc, all of which contribute to the preservation of eyesight. The amounts of lutein, zeaxanthin and meso-zeaxanthin are also higher than in other products. Finally, the special substances Q10, alpha-lipoic acid and pterostilbene were added.
B vitamins in the best possible form and at the ideal dosage
The Jeden Tag multis contain a large amount of B vitamins, but in acceptable dosages. The daily requirement, the average intakes and their lower limits were examined in detail. Not only the latest scientific findings and the safe upper limits are taken into account, but also the body's ability to convert the various B vitamins. In addition, all formulas include the biologically active forms of vitamins B2 (riboflavin-5'-phosphate), B6 (pyridoxal-5'-phosphate), B12 (methyl- and adenosylcobalamin) as well as folate (5-methyltetrahydrofolate-glucosamine salt). These are the forms used by the body, and research shows they have higher bioavailability in the body.
Pyridoxal-5'-phosphate as the form of vitamin B6
Occasionally tingling or numbness in the hands or feet can occur when very high amounts of vitamin B6 are taken. For this reason, in the Netherlands a maximum safe daily dose of 21 mg for adults applies to vitamin supplements. The daily multis are well below this (maximum 4.2 mg). Only the biologically active form of vitamin B6, pyridoxal-5'-phosphate (P-5'-P), is used, instead of pyridoxine HCl, which must still be converted in the body. It is currently being investigated whether the occasional side effects mentioned above occur only with vitamin B6 in the form of pyridoxine HCl and not, or to a lesser extent, with pyridoxal-5'-phosphate. Indications suggest that only pyridoxine HCl in high doses is toxic to nerve cells.
Folic acid as 5-methyltetrahydrofolate
The folic acid (pteroylmonoglutamic acid) often used in supplements for stability reasons is a synthetic form that does not occur naturally. In foods it is present as folate. Folic acid taken via supplements must be converted in the body into tetrahydrofolate and then into 5-methyltetrahydrofolate (5-MTHF). Studies show that this complicated conversion process is far from optimal in a considerable number of people. Adding 5-MTHF eliminates this problem.
The Jeden Tag multis use the superior form 5-methyltetrahydrofolate bound as a glucosamine salt (trademark Quatrefolic®). Thanks to this glucosamine salt (of plant origin), the biologically active form can be kept stable and optimal absorption is ensured. Studies show that Quatrefolic® is characterised by higher water solubility, stability and bioavailability. Furthermore, 5-MTHF can cross the blood–brain barrier, unlike the “normal” (synthetic) form of folic acid.
Vitamin B12 in the form of adenosyl- and methylcobalamin
The process of absorbing vitamin B12 from food is complicated. There are indications that the NRV (formerly RDA) of 2.5 µg per day was set too low and that requirements in healthy adults and older people can vary and rise above 20 µg per day. To ensure the safety of vitamin B12 supplementation and to take into account the fact that absorption of B12 from foods and supplements is not always simple, the Jeden Tag multis contain higher doses of the biologically active forms methyl- and adenosylcobalamin.
Cyanocobalamin, an inexpensive synthetic variant of vitamin B12 that does not occur naturally and must be converted by the body into active forms, is an ingredient of many other B12 products and multivitamins. In this process the cyanide portion of the cobalamin (B12) is separated, which then requires metabolism by the body. According to studies, the bioavailability of vitamin B12 as methyl- and adenosylcobalamin is higher than that of cyanocobalamin.
Plant-based sources rich in vitamin D
In recent years European regulatory authorities have concluded that the value for an adequate dietary intake of vitamin D (15 µg) should be set higher and that the maximum allowed dose (100 µg) could be increased. In the Netherlands there is still caution, and it is said that 10 µg would be sufficient and the upper limit should be 75 µg. Strangely, the NRV (or RDA) still remains 5 µg. In the orthomolecular world the importance of higher doses has, however, been known for some time. Leading experts on vitamin D recommend that the calcidiol level in adults should be at least 75 nmol/l. To maintain such a vitamin D level in the blood, an oral daily dose of 25–75 µg vitamin D3 is required. The Jeden Tag multis contain high amounts of vitamin D3 (cholecalciferol). When it comes to raising vitamin D levels, this form is far more effective than vitamin D2 (ergocalciferol). In addition, the new Jeden Tag multis contain plant-based vitamin D3 (Vitamin D3V®). The reason is that it is produced from algae and not from sheep’s wool fat (as most other vitamin D3 products). This makes all multis in the Jeden Tag range suitable for vegans.
Vitamin K1 and K2
The Jeden Tag multivitamins now contain a small amount of vitamin K1 and an increased amount of vitamin K2. Vitamin K1 is predominantly taken up by the liver and is mainly responsible for activating clotting factors. In contrast, vitamin K2 has higher bioavailability, is distributed much more throughout body tissues and therefore more effectively activates other vitamin-K-dependent enzymes such as osteocalcin and MGP. Among other things, they ensure that calcium is absorbed correctly and reaches where it belongs: in the bones.
For blood clotting, which is essential for survival, the body uses vitamin K first. Vitamin K2 is a raw material whose price is significantly higher than that of vitamin K1. Therefore a small amount of K1 is mixed into the multis to ensure this is used for primary blood-clotting function, while K2 is used for the other equally important functions.
By the way, the NRV for vitamin K that was set is based on the amount necessary for normal blood clotting. It is odd that the optimal dosage of vitamin K for other body processes that depend on vitamin K was not taken into account.
Stability of vitamin K2
It appears that vitamin K2 is a very sensitive substance. The content of this vitamin in a tablet or capsule drops particularly rapidly in combination with calcium and/or magnesium. Technically it is a real challenge to use vitamin K2 in a product with high doses of calcium and/or magnesium. Therefore Vitals uses a K2 addition with the brand name K2Vital® Delta, which remains stable even in a formula with many of these minerals. A patented microencapsulation process is used to protect the fat-soluble K2 particles with two layers and thus prevent reactions with other ingredients. Vitals had the stability of K2Vital® Delta tested by an independent laboratory, and it proved to be the best product. A comparison was made with other brands of vitamin K2, especially in combination with the ingredients of Vitals products. It was concluded that protection of K2 is essential, that the K2 content remained constant with K2Vital® Delta and that it was superior to the other K2 ingredients.
Natural calcium and magnesium from the sea
For the multis, the calcium and magnesium preparations of the Aquamin® brand, derived from the sea, are used from now on. This allows the tablets to achieve significantly higher doses than the previously used compound forms, while absorption of these ingredients has been proven to be good.
The magnesium (Aquamin Magnesium) comes from the seawater of the Irish Sea and studies demonstrate its good bioavailability. The raw material contains, in addition to about 35% elemental magnesium, small amounts of other minerals and trace elements.
The calcium (Aquamin Calcium) is obtained from the red algae Lithothamnion calcareum. This algal species absorbs minerals and trace elements from the sea and stores them. Naturally it shows a nice red or pinkish hue, but when it dies it calcifies and takes on a white or light grey colour. Only calcified red algae harvested from the waters along the Icelandic coast are collected. The raw material contains, in addition to a calcium content of 32%, also 3% magnesium and small amounts of other minerals and trace elements.
Perhaps the synergistic effect of the natural trace element profile of this calcium and magnesium explains the better absorption and the impressive studies carried out with it.
Zinc in the form of amino acid chelate (bisglycinate)
For the mineral zinc, amino acid chelates (bisglycinates) are used. Each zinc particle is tightly bound (chelated) to two molecules of the amino acid glycine. Minerals in this combined form can pass well into the small intestine and are very well absorbed there. Vitals makes a targeted selection of the amino acid chelates from Albion Minerals, recognisable by the TRAACS® brand, which stands for “The Real Amino Acid Chelate System”. This brand was created to distinguish itself from other, possibly inferior and unstable amino acid chelates. Albion holds over 100 patents worldwide that secure the process, the science and the structure of its amino acid chelate minerals.
Unique: relatively high choline dose
Choline has for some time been used more or less as a standard ingredient in multivitamin supplements. But almost always in small amounts (between 10 and 30 mg), because not much was known about it. But that is changing more and more! In 2012 the European Commission approved three health claims for choline that apply at a dose of at least 82.5 mg. It is important for normal fat metabolism, homocysteine metabolism and liver function. In the USA an RDA of 550 mg per day was set in 2016, based on clinical studies, to determine daily requirements. Choline was also recognised by EFSA in 2016 as an essential nutrient, but no NRV has been set for it so far. The recommendation for adequate intake is 400 mg per day. This is based on average intake values in European countries and not on the American study that produced a value of 550 mg per day. Average intake among European adults ranges between 291 and 468 mg per day. There are plenty of reasons to include a generous dose of choline in a daily multivitamin! Jeden Tag 50+ uses choline of the brand VitaCholine®. This brand represents the highest quality and extensive research has been conducted with it.
Lutein, zeaxanthin and meso-zeaxanthin
Lutein, zeaxanthin and meso-zeaxanthin are natural carotenoids. These substances are particularly highly concentrated in the retina and the macula lutea (“yellow spot”). Lutein and zeaxanthin cannot be produced by the body and therefore must be obtained from the diet. They are found, among other things, in green leafy vegetables and in red, yellow and orange fruit and vegetables. Meso-zeaxanthin is present in foods only to a small extent (e.g. in prawns, salmon skin and the skin and flesh of trout). It is mainly formed in the retina by an enzymatic conversion of lutein. However, it can be taken well via supplements. Meso-zeaxanthin has only recently become known as an excellent supplement and should be preferred to lutein and zeaxanthin alone.
