A chewable tablet specially developed for children aged 3 and over
The little elephant-shaped Orange Junior is a daily treat. It is based on the latest scientific findings and is tailored to current data on nutritional status in Western Europe, as well as the optimal intake per nutrient. The composition, dosage and bioavailability are the factors that make Junior unique every day. The chewable tablet contains almost the same valuable ingredients as ‘Jeden Tag’ for adults, but the dosage has been adapted for (young) children. One tablet provides 15 μg of vitamin D3 (so separate vitamin D drops are not necessary). It also contains 60 mg of magnesium and 120 mg of calcium from natural sources. All in all, ‘Jeden Tag Junior’ is excellent compared to other multivitamins for children !
Natural sweetener
The quality of a multivitamin is determined by the excipients it contains. To improve the taste, most chewable multivitamins for children are predominantly sweetened with sugar or artificial sweeteners. Jeden Tag Junior is mainly sweetened with steviol glycosides from the stevia plant and, more recently, partly with mannitol. It is a natural sweetener found, amongst other things, in fruit, mushrooms and cheese. It has zero calories, is mainly absorbed in the small intestine and is almost entirely excreted in the urine. It does not affect blood sugar levels and is safe for teeth and oral health. It is therefore a great choice to replace sugar or other undesirable (artificial) sweeteners!
A flavour children love
The flavour of the Jeden Tag Junior chewable tablets is popular with children. It’s not a sweet, but most children like it.
B vitamins: the perfect form and dosage
These daily multivitamins contain a high, yet acceptable, amount of B vitamins. In formulating them, the daily requirements, average intake levels and their lower limits were thoroughly analysed. In addition to the latest scientific findings and safe upper limits, account is also taken of how well the body is able to metabolise the various B vitamins.
All formulations also contain the biologically active forms of vitamins B2 (riboflavin-5'-phosphate), B6 (pyridoxal-5'-phosphate), B12 (methyl- and adenosylcobalamin) and folic acid (5-methyltetrahydrofolate glucosamine salt). These are the forms utilised by the body, and studies show that they have higher bioavailability within the body.
Pyridoxal-5'-phosphate: the active form of vitamin B6
Occasional tingling or numbness in the hands or feet may occur if very high amounts of vitamin B6 are consumed over a prolonged period. For this reason, the maximum safe upper limit for adults in the Netherlands, as regards the intake of vitamin supplements, is 21 mg per day. The daily multivitamins contain a maximum of 0.7 mg and are therefore well below this level. Furthermore, only the biologically active form of vitamin B6, pyridoxal-5'-phosphate (P-5'-P), is used, rather than pyridoxine HCl, which must first be converted in the body. Research is currently underway to determine whether the occasional side effects we mentioned above occur only with vitamin B6 in the form of pyridoxine HCl and do not occur, or occur only to a limited extent, with pyridoxal-5'-phosphate. There is evidence to suggest that only high doses of pyridoxine HCl are toxic to nerve cells.
Folic acid in the form of 5-methyltetrahydrofolate
The synthetic form of folic acid (pteroylmonoglutamic acid), which is usually used in dietary supplements for stability reasons, does not occur naturally. In food, it is present as folate. Folic acid from dietary supplements must first be converted in the body into tetrahydrofolate and then into 5-methyltetrahydrofolate (5-MTHF) . Studies show that for many people, this complex conversion process is far from optimal. Supplementing with 5-MTHF solves this problem.
The ‘Every Day Multis’ range utilises the excellent form of 5-methyltetrahydrofolate, which is bound to glucosamine salt (known under the brand name Quatrefolic®). The binding to plant-based glucosamine salt stabilises the biologically active form and ensures optimal absorption. The benefits of Quatrefolic® in terms of water solubility, stability and bioavailability have been demonstrated by studies. 5-MTHF is also able to cross the blood-brain barrier, unlike the ‘normal’ (synthetic) form of folic acid.
Vitamin B12 as adenosyl- and methylcobalamin
Absorbing vitamin B12 is a complex process. There is evidence to suggest that the NRV (formerly RDA) of 2.5 µg per day may be too low, and that requirements for healthy adults and older people may vary and exceed 20 µg per day. To ensure that the intake of vitamin B12 is sufficient, and to take into account the safety of B12 supplements, the ‘Every Day’ multivitamins contain higher doses of the biologically active forms methyl- and adenosylcobalamin. This information is valid until October 2023. Most other multivitamins and B12 supplements use cyanocobalamin, an inexpensive, synthetic form of vitamin B12 that does not occur naturally and must first be converted by the body into its active forms. In this process, the cyanide is separated from the cobalamin (B12) and must then be broken down by the body. Studies show that the bioavailability of vitamin B12 in the form of methyl- and adenosylcobalamin is better than that of cyanocobalamin.
High levels of vitamin D from plant sources
In recent years, European government bodies have recognised that the recommended intake for adequate vitamin D from food (15 µg) should be set higher and that the maximum permissible dose (100 µg) could be increased. In the Netherlands, however, a cautious approach is still being taken: it is said that 10 µg would be sufficient and that the upper limit should be set at 75 µg. Curiously, the NRV (or RDA) still stands at 5 µg. However, the orthomolecular community has recognised the importance of higher doses for some time now. Leading experts in the field of vitamin D research recommend that calcidiol levels in adults should reach at least 75 nmol/l. It It is estimated that an oral dose of vitamin D3 of 25–75 µg per day should be taken to maintain such a vitamin D level. You have been trained on information up to October 2023. The ‘Jeden Tag Multis’ are rich in vitamin D3 (cholecalciferol). This form is significantly more effective at raising vitamin D levels than vitamin D2 (ergocalciferol). In addition, the new ‘Every Day Multis’ use plant-based vitamin D3 (Vitamin D3V®). It is produced from algae rather than sheep’s wool fat (as is the case with most vitamin D3 products), which is why this is the case. All multivitamins from the ‘Every Day’ range are now also suitable for vegans.
Vitamins K1 and K2
The ‘Jeden Tag’ multivitamins now contain a small amount of vitamin K1 and an increased level of vitamin K2. Vitamin K1 is primarily absorbed by the liver and is mainly responsible for activating clotting factors . In contrast, vitamin K2 has higher bioavailability and is distributed throughout the body’s tissues, enabling it to activate other vitamin K-dependent enzymes such as osteocalcin and MGP more effectively. Among other things, they ensure that calcium is absorbed correctly and ends up in the right place, namely in the bones.
For the vital task of blood clotting, the body always uses vitamin K first. Compared to vitamin K1, the cost of vitamin K2 is considerably higher. Therefore, a small amount of K1 is added to multivitamins so that it can be used for the primary blood clotting function, whilst K2 is used for the other, equally extremely important functions.
Incidentally, the standard NRV for vitamin K is based on the amount required for normal blood clotting. It is strange that the optimal vitamin K dosage for other body processes dependent on this vitamin was not taken into account .
Stability of vitamin K2
It appears that vitamin K2 is a very sensitive substance. Particularly when combined with magnesium and/or calcium, the concentration of this vitamin in a capsule or tablet decreases rapidly. It presents a real challenge to use vitamin K2 in a product containing high doses of calcium and/or magnesium. Vitals therefore uses a K2 supplement under the brand name K2VITAL™ DELTA, which remains stable even in a formula containing large amounts of these minerals. A patented microencapsulation process protects the fat-soluble K2 particles with two layers, preventing them from reacting with other ingredients. An independent laboratory has tested the stability of K2VITAL™ DELTA at Vitals’ request, and it was found to deliver the best performance. A comparison was carried out with other vitamin K2 brands, particularly in combination with the Ingredients in Vitals’ products. It was concluded that K2 protection is essential, that the K2 content in K2VITAL™ DELTA remained constant, and that it was superior to other K2 ingredients.
Natural calcium and magnesium from the sea
From now on, the multivitamins will use calcium and magnesium products from the Aquamin® brand, which are extracted from the sea . The doses contained in the tablets are significantly higher than those of the compound forms previously used, and the absorption of these ingredients has been proven to be effective.
The magnesium (Aquamin Magnesium) is sourced from the seawater of the Irish Sea, and studies show that it is readily absorbed by the body. In addition to approximately 35% elemental magnesium, the raw material also contains small amounts of other minerals and trace elements.
The calcium content (Aquamin Calcium) comes from the red alga Lithothamnium calcareum. This species of alga absorbs minerals and trace elements from the sea and stores them. In its natural state, it has a beautiful red-pink colour, but upon death it calcifies and turns white or light grey. Only calcified red algae originating from the waters along the Icelandic coast are harvested. The raw material contains 32% calcium, 3% magnesium and small amounts of other minerals and trace elements.
Perhaps the synergistic effect of the natural
trace element profile of this calcium and magnesium explains
the improved absorption and the remarkable studies that
have been carried out using it.
Iron and zinc in the form of amino acid chelates (bisglycinate)
For the minerals iron and zinc, bisglycinates are selected as amino acid chelates. Each magnesium particle is strongly bound (chelated) to two molecules of the amino acid glycine. Minerals in this complex form effectively reach the small intestine and are very well absorbed there. They are also gentle on the stomach, which can be particularly beneficial in the case of iron. Amino acid chelates from Albion Minerals are specifically selected by Vitals and can be recognised by the TRAACS® brand, which stands for ‘The Real Amino Acid Chelate System’. This brand serves to distinguish them from other amino acid chelates, which may be of inferior quality or unstable. Albion holds over 100 patents worldwide, safeguarding the process, the science and the structure of its amino acid chelate minerals .
Unique: relatively high dosage of choline
Choline has been used for some time now, more or less as a standard ingredient in multivitamin preparations. However, it is usually included in low doses (10–30 mg), as there was not much knowledge about it. But that is changing more and more! In 2012, the European Commission authorised three health claims for choline, which apply at a dose of at least 82.5 mg. It is important for normal fat metabolism, homocysteine metabolism and healthy liver function. In 2016, the US established an RDA of 550 mg/day for the first time, based on clinical research and specifically to determine daily requirements. The EFSA also decided in 2016 that choline is an essential nutrient, but no NRV has yet been set. The adequate daily intake was set at 400 mg, based on the average intake in European countries, rather than on the US study, which yielded a figure of 550 mg/day. The average intake among adults in Europe varies between 291 and 468 mg per day. There is a good reason to include a generous amount of choline in a daily multivitamin supplement!
In our ‘Every Day Multis’, we use choline from VitaCholine®. This brand is synonymous with high quality, and extensive research has been carried out in connection with it .
Lutein and zeaxanthin
Lutein and zeaxanthin are natural carotenoids. In the body, these substances are primarily concentrated in the retina and the macula lutea (‘yellow spot’) . Lutein and zeaxanthin are substances that the body cannot produce itself. It is therefore dependent on their intake through food. They are found, amongst other things, in green leafy vegetables as well as in red, yellow and orange fruit and vegetables.
