Ginkgo plus phosphatidylserine for the brain
Ginkgo biloba, or the Japanese nut tree, which originates from central China, is the oldest living tree species on Earth (around 300 million years). Ginkgo biloba leaves have health-promoting properties when taken in the form of extracts. Ginkgo leaves have been used in traditional Chinese medicine for more than 5,000 years to promote health. In Western countries, it is primarily used to support blood circulation and cognitive functions such as memory, concentration and learning ability.
Effective results are only observed with highly concentrated, standardised extracts of Ginkgo biloba. Vitals Ginkgo biloba PS capsules contain 480 mg of the active ingredient Virtiva®, which is composed of 120 mg of Ginkgo biloba extract (24 mg of flavone glycosides and 6 mg of terpene lactones) and 360 mg of lecithin (55 mg of phosphatidylserine). The ratio of flavone glycosides to terpene lactones (24:6) is the one most commonly used in scientific research on Ginkgo biloba .
Optimised absorption through Phytosome® technology
Thanks to the patented Phytosome® technology developed by the Italian company Indena, the absorption and bioavailability of the flavone glycosides and terpene lactones in Ginkgo biloba-PS have been significantly increased. The term ‘Phytosome’ is derived from the Greek words ‘phuton’ (plant) and ‘soma’ (body) . The patented process reduces the natural agglomeration of certain phytonutrients that are difficult to absorb (such as those found in Ginkgo biloba) and combines them with phospholipids (phosphatidylserine) derived from sunflower lecithin. The active ingredients are not encapsulated (as in liposomes), but instead form a homogeneous mixture of small, easily absorbable particles. Ginkgo biloba active ingredients are lipophilic (terpene lactones) and hydrophilic (flavone glycosides). Phospholipids possess lipophilic properties on one side and hydrophilic properties on the other. Phytonutrients therefore often bind to phospholipids, forming what are known as phytosomes. This ensures they are absorbed particularly well. Cell membranes (such as those in the small intestine and the brain) consist of a phospholipid bilayer, which facilitates the effective uptake of active ingredients. Research has shown that this Phytosome® technology improves the absorption and bioavailability of phytonutrients.
Unlike with liposome technology, in the case of
a liposome, the active ingredient is located inside a particle
surrounded by a
double layer of phospholipids. The
Phytosome® technology is based on true homogenisation,
in which the active ingredient is not encapsulated. For this reason,
the amount of phospholipids required is significantly lower
than with liposomes.
Indena is a globally active Italian manufacturer and specialist in phytonutrients. Based on extensive research and technological developments, they offer products of high quality, with a sound foundation and excellent bioavailability.

Vitals, our new brand from 2025
We are constantly on the lookout for brands that represent our ideals: The highest quality, consistent omission of superfluous additives such as titanium dioxide or porcine gelatine, very good value for money and absolute reliability in delivery to us and therefore also to customers.
This is very difficult because such companies are extremely rare among the mass of manufacturers of food supplements that are now on the market. But we have managed to find them again, with Vitals from the Netherlands!
Manufacturer's address: Vitals Voedingssupplementen BV, Pieter Lieftinckweg 29, 1505 HX Zaandam, Netherlands. E-mail: customer service@vitals.eu.
