Green tea, one of the oldest beverages in the world!

Its history goes back more than 5,000 years. Green tea is particularly popular in China and Japan and is becoming increasingly popular in the West. This has long been due to its health benefits. Green tea is produced from the leaves of the tea plant Camellia sinensis, which mainly grows in Southeast Asia. It is an unfermented type of tea in which the tea leaves are treated with steam, thereby protecting the important constituents (polyphenols and catechins) from oxidation. With black tea, the tea leaves undergo fermentation, which greatly reduces the catechin content. Research has shown that it is the catechins that are responsible for the tea's health benefits. The most important catechin in green tea is epigallocatechin-3-gallate (EGCG). This product is standardised to 120 mg catechins and 75 mg EGCG per capsule. Moreover, thanks to the unique manufacturing process, these catechins are absorbed twice as well as with conventional green tea.

Improved absorption through Phytosome® technology

Vitals Green Tea-PS is more readily absorbed thanks to the use of the patented Phytosome® technology from the Italian manufacturer Indena. The term phytosome is derived from the Greek words 'phuton' (plant) and 'soma' (body). In the patented manufacturing process, the natural clumping of certain poorly absorbable phytonutrients (e.g. polyphenols from green tea) is reduced, and they are mixed with phospholipids (phosphatidylcholine) from sunflower lecithin. The active ingredients are not encapsulated (as in liposomes); instead, a homogeneous mixture of small, easily absorbable particles is formed. Polyphenols (such as the catechins in green tea) have a natural affinity for phospholipids. The result is the formation of phytosomes, with the polyphenols adhering to the phospholipids. In this way they are particularly well absorbed. Cell membranes (e.g. those of the small intestinal cells) themselves also consist of a phospholipid bilayer, which allows these phytosomes to pass through the intestinal wall effectively and for the active substances to be taken up into the bloodstream (see figure 1). Studies have shown that the absorption of catechins from green tea is more than doubled by this phytosome technology.

Different from liposome technology

In a liposome, the active ingredient is contained in the centre of a small sphere surrounded by a double layer of phospholipids. With the phytosome technology, it is a truly homogeneous mixture and the active ingredient is not encapsulated. Therefore, far fewer phospholipids are required than for liposomes.
