An amino acid for the nerves and a good night’s sleep
There are around 500 amino acids found in nature. Twenty of these amino acids act as building blocks for protein in the human body and are referred to as ‘essential amino acids’. These essential amino acids are classified into the groups ‘essential’, ‘semi-essential’ and ‘non-essential’. L-tryptophan is one of the essential amino acids, meaning that the body cannot produce it itself from other amino acids and is entirely dependent on dietary intake to meet its daily requirements.
The tryptophan content in food is too low to be used as a basis for the production of food supplements. Tryptophan for food supplements is usually obtained through a bespoke fermentation process. As microorganisms are capable of synthesising tryptophan themselves, this property is utilised in the process. The natural L-form of tryptophan is The natural L-form of tryptophan is produced in this way. The bioavailability of the natural L-form can be reduced by the synthetic D-form, as the latter has no effect of its own. D-tryptophan should therefore not be used as a dietary supplement.
Among other things, tryptophan serves as a precursor for niacin (vitamin B3), 5-HTP (5-hydroxytryptophan), the neurotransmitter serotonin and the hormone melatonin. It can cross the blood-brain barrier but is sensitive to competition from other amino acids. It is therefore advisable to take a tryptophan supplement on an empty stomach and separately from other amino acids.
