Liposomal Vitamin C, 250 ml

Optimal absorption thanks to liposomal processing

Vitals’ liposomal vitamin C provides, per 5 ml, three different forms (sodium ascorbate, potassium ascorbate and ascorbic acid) totalling 1000 mg of liquid liposomal vitamin C. Liposomes are tiny fat globules surrounded by a double layer of phospholipids, within which the active ingredient is contained. Cell membranes are also composed of a double layer of phospholipids, which allows the active ingredients in the liposomes to penetrate the cell.

The level of vitamin C in the blood is determined by the body through strict regulation of intestinal absorption, cellular transport and excretion. The intestine absorbs vitamin C primarily via active transport using a sodium-dependent vitamin C transporter (SVCT1). This process is efficient until a certain concentration is reached. Beyond this point, absorption does not increase further, as all transporters are saturated. The way in which vitamin C is supplied to the body can influence its absorption. The bioavailability of liposomal vitamin C is higher, as it does not rely on the sodium-dependent vitamin C transporter .

Effects of vitamin C

Vitamin C is perhaps the most frequently mentioned vitamin, known primarily for its positive influence on the immune system. And that is correct. The immune system is supported by vitamin C, particularly during intense physical activity or in cold environments. However, this vitamin is also involved in a wide range of processes.

In the body, vitamin C acts as a water-soluble antioxidant and is crucial for combating free radicals. It is a component of a complex system comprising the body’s own antioxidants, those derived from food, and antioxidant enzymes, which are interdependent and interact with one another. In this role, it protects DNA, proteins and fats from oxidative damage, thereby helping to maintain healthy cells and tissues. In addition, vitamin C is required as a coenzyme for three different enzymes involved in the production of collagen (the most abundant building block in the human body). Normal collagen formation is important for bones, cartilage, gums, skin, tendons and blood vessels, amongst other things.

Vitamin C is required as a cofactor for dopamine beta-monooxygenase (DBM), the enzyme that converts dopamine into noradrenaline and adrenaline. C is required. Both act as neurotransmitters and hormones in the body, meaning that vitamin C’s influence on the function of the nervous system and its role in normal mental function should be viewed positively. Two enzymes involved in the synthesis of carnitine – a molecule required for the transport of long-chain fatty acids into the mitochondria for energy production – depend on vitamin C.

In this way, vitamin C helps maintain energy levels. It can also be helpful in combating tiredness. Furthermore, there are many people whose diet does not provide sufficient iron – particularly women of childbearing age, pregnant women and (young) children. The absorption of iron from food is enhanced by vitamin C. This applies to non-haem iron, which is found in both plant-based and animal-based foods. The absorption of haem iron, which is found exclusively in animal products, is not affected by vitamin C. Around 90% of the iron found in food is non-haem iron. Haem iron accounts for only 10 per cent. Vitamin C can, as an electron donor, convert oxidised vitamin E back into its active, reduced form, thereby preserving the effect of vitamin E .

As the human body is unable to produce vitamin C, it relies on obtaining it through the diet.

We are constantly on the lookout for brands that represent our ideals: The highest quality, consistent omission of superfluous additives such as titanium dioxide or porcine gelatine, very good value for money and absolute reliability in delivery to us and therefore also to customers.
This is very difficult because such companies are extremely rare among the mass of manufacturers of food supplements that are now on the market. But we have managed to find them again, with Vitals from the Netherlands!
