Liposomal Vitamin C, 250 ml

Optimal absorption through liposomal formulation

Vitals' liposomal vitamin C provides per 5 ml three different forms (sodium ascorbate, potassium ascorbate and ascorbic acid) totalling 1000 mg of liquid liposomal vitamin C. Liposomes are small fat globules enclosed by a bilayer of phospholipids, with the active ingredient stored inside. Cell membranes are also composed of a bilayer of phospholipids, which allows the active ingredients in the liposomes to penetrate the cell.

The vitamin C level in the blood is determined in the body by strict regulation of intestinal absorption, cellular transport and excretion. The intestine mainly absorbs vitamin C via an active transport mechanism using a sodium-dependent vitamin C transporter (SVCT1). This works efficiently until a certain concentration is reached. Thereafter uptake does not increase further because all transporters are saturated. The way vitamin C is delivered to the body can influence absorption. The bioavailability of liposomal vitamin C is higher because it does not rely on the sodium-dependent vitamin C transporter.

Effects of vitamin C

Vitamin C is perhaps the most frequently mentioned vitamin, known above all for its positive influence on the immune system. And that is true. The immune system is supported by vitamin C, especially during intense physical activity or in cold environments. However, this vitamin is also involved in a variety of other processes.

In the body vitamin C acts as a water-soluble antioxidant and is crucial for combating free radicals. It is part of a complex system of endogenous antioxidants, dietary antioxidants and antioxidant enzymes that are interdependent and interact with each other. In this role it protects DNA, proteins and lipids from oxidative damage and thus helps maintain healthy cells and tissues. In addition, vitamin C is required as a coenzyme for three different enzymes involved in the production of collagen (the most abundant structural protein in the human body). Normal collagen formation is important, among other things, for bones, cartilage, gums, skin, tendons and blood vessels.

Vitamin C is required as a cofactor for dopamine beta-monooxygenase (DBM), the enzyme that converts dopamine into noradrenaline and adrenaline. Both act as neurotransmitters and hormones in the body, meaning vitamin C's influence on nervous system function and its role in normal psychological function is beneficial. Two enzymes involved in the synthesis of carnitine — a molecule needed to transport long-chain fatty acids into the mitochondria for energy production — depend on vitamin C.

Thus vitamin C contributes to energy levels. It can also be helpful against tiredness. Furthermore, many people do not get sufficient iron from their diet — especially women of childbearing age, pregnant women and (young) children. The absorption of iron from food is improved by vitamin C. This concerns non-haem iron, which occurs in both plant and animal foods. The absorption of haem iron, which occurs only in animal products, is not affected by vitamin C. Approximately 90% of the iron found in food is non-haem iron. Haem iron accounts for only 10%. Vitamin C can act as an electron donor, converting oxidised vitamin E back into its active, reduced form and thereby preserving the action of vitamin E.

Because the human body is unable to produce vitamin C, it is reliant on intake from the diet.

This is very difficult because such companies are extremely rare among the mass of dietary supplement manufacturers now on the market. But we have once again managed to find one with Vitals from the Netherlands!
