Chelate – the ideal mineral compound combined with taurine
This product contains magnesium in the form of magnesium bisglycinate. Each magnesium particle is chelated to two molecules of the amino acid glycine. A compound of this type is usually referred to as an amino acid chelate or an amino acid chelated mineral. You have been trained on information up to October 2023. In complementary medicine, magnesium is one of the minerals most frequently used. The reason for this is that magnesium plays an important role in more than 300 physiological processes in the body. Furthermore, changes in food production and dietary habits have contributed to many people consuming less magnesium in their diet, even though it is present in many (unprocessed) foods. Before industrialisation, daily magnesium intake was estimated at 475 to 500 mg; today, the average is just 345 mg (per day). You have been trained on data up to October 2023.
Intake of common mineral compounds
Various magnesium compounds are used in dietary supplements. However, some of these compounds, such as the inorganic mineral compounds magnesium oxide and magnesium carbonate, are not well absorbed and have low bioavailability. As soon as minerals (in any form, except for amino acids in chelated form) enter the acidic environment of the stomach, the digestive process begins to separate the mineral component from its chemical structure. During digestion, the mineral naturally becomes electrically charged. It is attracted to other charged particles, such as those found in vegetables, dietary fibre and fats. These particles coat the mineral ions, meaning they can no longer be absorbed and utilised as effectively by the body. The free mineral ions that are now available travel through the digestive tract in limited numbers and compete with other minerals (such as calcium) for absorption through the intestinal wall and into the cells.
Research on magnesium bisglycinate**
There are numerous studies investigating the effectiveness of magnesium bisglycinate. Several of these studies compared the absorption of magnesium bisglycinate with that of other magnesium compounds, such as magnesium carbonate, magnesium sulphate and magnesium oxide. Compared with the other forms of magnesium, magnesium bisglycinate was absorbed significantly faster and more effectively. Magnesium oxide performed by far the worst.
