Magnesium bisglycinate 100 mg with taurine, 60 tablets

Chelate – the best mineral compound with taurine

This product contains magnesium in the form of magnesium bisglycinate. This involves a chelating bond between each magnesium particle and two molecules of the amino acid glycine. Such a compound is commonly referred to as an amino acid chelate or an amino acid chelated mineral.
Magnesium is one of the minerals most frequently used in complementary medicine. This is because magnesium plays a significant role in over 300 physiological processes in the body. Furthermore, changes in food production and eating habits have meant that many people consume less magnesium through their diet, even though many (unprocessed) foods contain magnesium. Before industrialisation, magnesium intake was estimated at 475 to 500 mg per day, whereas today it stands at 345 mg (on average per day).

Intake of common mineral compounds

There are various magnesium compounds used in dietary supplements. Some of these, such as the inorganic mineral compounds magnesium oxide and magnesium carbonate, are not well absorbed and have low bioavailability. When minerals (in any bound form, with the exception of amino acids in chelated form) enter the acidic environment of the stomach, the digestive process begins by separating the mineral component from its chemical structure. During the digestive process, the mineral becomes naturally electrically charged. Because of this charge, it is attracted to other charged particles, such as those found in vegetables, dietary fibre and fats. These particles isolate the mineral ions, meaning they can no longer be absorbed and utilised by the body as effectively. The limited amount of free mineral ions now available travels through the digestive tract and competes with other minerals (e.g. calcium) for absorption through the intestinal wall and into the cells.

Studies on magnesium bisglycinate**

Several studies have been carried out to confirm the efficacy of magnesium bisglycinate. Some of these studies compared the absorption of magnesium bisglycinate with various magnesium compounds such as magnesium carbonate, magnesium sulphate and magnesium oxide. Magnesium bisglycinate was absorbed significantly faster and more effectively than the other forms of magnesium. Magnesium oxide performed by far the worst.
