Magnesium Sport is the magnesium-based dietary supplement for (elite) athletes
Anyone who takes sport seriously should be fully aware of what they are consuming. What ingredients are in the meal, what are the nutritional values, and what is the composition and quality of the dietary supplement? It is at least as important to be clear about what you are not consuming. You do not want to consume any unwanted substances or have anything to do with doping. For this reason, Vitals products are screened for contaminants, and every batch of Magnesium Sport 100 mg is tested for substances relevant to doping. This is carried out in accordance with the NZVT system.
The composition of Magnesium Sport is identical to that of Magnesium (bisglycinate) 100 mg, Vitals’ best-selling magnesium product. Only the name and the doping testing of each batch of Magnesium Sport in accordance with the NZVT system, followed by certification, differ.
Each tablet of Magnesium Sport contains up to 100 mg of the easily absorbable magnesium bisglycinate (a form of magnesium bound to amino acids), supplemented with 200 mg of taurine. When it comes to magnesium supplements, choosing the right compound form is crucial. This describes the form in which the magnesium is contained in the tablet or capsule (e.g. bisglycinate or citrate). Find out more below about the differences in the quality of magnesium products to help you make an informed choice.
Suitable for competitive athletes, tested for doping
Every batch of Magnesium Sport is tested for doping in accordance with the Dutch safety system for dietary supplements in elite sport (“Nederlands Zekerheidssysteem Voedingssupplementen Topsport”, or NZVT for short). The NZVT system, similar to well-known initiatives in Germany such as the Kölner Liste®, is aimed specifically at (elite) athletes who may be subject to doping tests, and offers at least as much assurance. The system is based on a partnership between the Dutch Anti-Doping Agency, the Dutch Olympic Committee and Sports Federation, and the Dutch Association for Food Supplements. Further details can be found at www.dopingautoriteit.nl/nzvt. Are you interested in a Vitals product that is not tested in every batch? Don’t wait to get in touch with us. Why is magnesium beneficial for athletes?
The body contains approximately 21 to 28 grams of magnesium . Less than 1% circulates in the blood, around 20% is found in the muscles, 20% in other soft tissues and the liver, and around 60% is stored in the bones and teeth. Magnesium is therefore beneficial for the muscles and essential for maintaining strong teeth and bones. It is also involved in over 300 enzymatic reactions. Magnesium plays an important role as a cofactor for enzymes involved in protein synthesis (the process by which proteins are produced based on DNA). It is also a cofactor for numerous enzymes involved in maintaining an electrical potential across the cell membrane, which is why it helps to maintain a good electrolyte balance. (Cells, particularly nerve and muscle cells, (Cells, particularly nerve and muscle cells, use the electrical charge of electrolytes to transmit electrical impulses to and receive them from other cells, such as nerve impulses or muscle contractions.) Magnesium plays a role in nerve conduction and muscle contraction, making it important for muscle function – including that of the heart muscle. An insufficient intake of magnesium can also lead to fatigue. In this case, magnesium can help you get back into shape. It contributes to the release of energy from fats, carbohydrates and proteins, thereby supporting energy levels. It is also important for brain and nerve function, which affects concentration, memory and mood. It also supports normal cell division and the formation of cells and tissues.
Taurine
Furthermore, this product contains 200 mg of taurine . This is a substance similar to amino acids and is found primarily in meat, fish and seafood . It has a direct synergistic effect with magnesium by stimulating the cellular uptake of this mineral (magnesium acts mainly intracellularly).
Absorption of common mineral compounds
Various magnesium compounds are used in dietary supplements. Some of these, such as inorganic mineral compounds (see Figure 1) The bioavailability of magnesium oxide and magnesium carbonate is low, and they are poorly absorbed. Minerals (except in chelated amino acid form) enter the acidic environment of the stomach, the digestive process begins with the separation of the mineral component from its chemical structure. Naturally, as the mineral element passes through the digestive process, it becomes electrically charged. This charge attracts other charged particles, such as those found in vegetables, fibre and fats. These food particles ensure that the mineral ions are isolated, resulting in less effective absorption and utilisation by the body (see Figure 2). The free mineral ions that are now available are present in limited numbers and continue through the digestive tract, where they compete with other minerals (such as calcium) for absorption through the intestinal wall and into the cells .
Molecular structure of mineral amino acid chelates. Substances.
Whilst the chelate structure in an amino acid chelate such as magnesium bisglycinate withstands the effects of gastric juice or digestive enzymes (unlike other mineral compounds), it is nevertheless weak enough to release the mineral element in the intestine once it has been absorbed by the cells. The amino acids wrap themselves around the mineral element, protecting it during digestion and holding it in place. The chelate also has a neutral electrical charge, which means it does not adhere to food particles in the stomach and gut. As a result, the amino acid chelate reaches the small intestine intact, where it is absorbed as a dipeptide (a compound consisting of two amino acids). This offers enormous advantages, as the body can absorb amino acids (particularly dipeptides) very easily – especially when they consist of the smallest amino acid, glycine. Amino acid-chelated minerals are significantly more easily absorbed than other forms of minerals. The amino acid-chelated mineral is actively transported into the mucous cells of the epithelium of the jejunum (the middle section of the small intestine) without competing with other minerals. It is only within the mucous cells that metabolic processes cause the glycine and the mineral to be broken down, making them available to the various organs and body systems.
Amino acid chelates from Albion
Minerals Vitals relies exclusively on authentic amino acid chelates from Albion Minerals, the specialist in amino acid chelates, bearing the TRAACS® trademark, which stands for ‘The Real Amino Acid Chelate System’. This brand was launched to distinguish itself from other, potentially inferior and unstable amino acid chelates. Over 100 globally valid patents safeguard Albion’s process, science and structure behind its amino acid-chelated minerals. In addition, the minerals are analysed and a quality check is carried out on every batch produced. It is essential to verify that chelation has actually taken place and that the bonds are sufficiently strong .
Studies on magnesium bisglycinate**
Several studies have been carried out to confirm the efficacy of magnesium bisglycinate. Some of these studies compared the absorption of magnesium bisglycinate with various magnesium compounds such as magnesium carbonate, magnesium sulphate and magnesium oxide. Magnesium bisglycinate was absorbed significantly faster and more effectively than the other forms of magnesium. Magnesium oxide performed by far the worst.

Vitals, our new brand from 2025
We are constantly on the lookout for brands that represent our ideals: The highest quality, consistent omission of superfluous additives such as titanium dioxide or porcine gelatine, very good value for money and absolute reliability in delivery to us and therefore also to customers.
This is very difficult because such companies are extremely rare among the mass of manufacturers of food supplements that are now on the market. But we have managed to find them again, with Vitals from the Netherlands!
