MSM stands for methylsulfonylmethane
Also known as organically bound sulphur. MSM consists of two methyl groups and approximately 34% elemental sulphur. MSM occurs naturally, for example in rainwater and in fresh fruit and vegetables (1 to 4 mg MSM per kg). MSM is relatively volatile and is lost when exposed to high temperatures or stored for prolonged periods . Breast milk is the most prominent natural source of MSM.
MSM is essential for life on Earth
The importance of MSM for life on Earth is enormous. Life on Earth as we know it would not be possible without MSM. MSM is produced naturally as part of the Earth’s sulphur cycle: algae and phytoplankton in the oceans absorb large quantities of inorganic sulphur from seawater and transform it into a simple organic form. When algae and plankton die, enzymes break down organic sulphur compounds into dimethyl sulphide (DMS). This is a volatile substance that is poorly soluble in water. It therefore accumulates in the atmosphere, where it is converted by ultraviolet light and ozone into converted into dimethyl sulphoxide (DMSO) and subsequently into methylsulphonylmethane (MSM) . MSM and DMSO dissolve readily in water . They act as the necessary condensation nuclei for the formation of raindrops. No clouds form and therefore there is no rain if DMSO and MSM are not present in the air. Trees and plants absorb DMSO and MSM from rainwater quickly and efficiently via their roots.
Manufacturing process
Although MSM is a naturally occurring substance, it would be impractical to extract it naturally. It would be undesirable to fell countless trees. Nowadays, DMSO, water and hydrogen peroxide are used as raw materials. DMSO is then converted into MSM using a complex process. It is of great importance that the manufacturing process used results in a pure end product. Unfortunately, however, this does not seem to be the case in the production of MSM. The expensive distillation process, which effectively removes any impurities in the raw materials, is far preferable to the commonly used (much cheaper) crystallisation process.
Vitals’ OptiMSM® MSM powder is a product from Bergstrom Nutrition and contains no additives whatsoever. It consists of 100% pure MSM. Bergstrom has invested over many decades in research into the development, optimisation, production, application and safety of OptiMSM®. This is an ongoing process in which the highest quality is the guiding principle. Only high-quality materials and raw materials are used in production. Furthermore, Bergstrom employs a unique multiple-distillation process, which is regarded as superior. Production takes place exclusively at a single site in North America. The production facility is dedicated solely to MSM manufacturing.Tests are carried out by an independent laboratory after each stage of production . This method ensures that quality is maintained throughout the entire manufacturing process. The result is a very high-quality MSM product: OptiMSM®. This is why OptiMSM® has consistently emerged as the purest product in all comparative tests.
