A multivitamin in tablet form, to be taken once a day
‘Every Day’ is specifically designed for adults. Vitals also offers special multivitamins for children, older adults and pregnant women or those planning a pregnancy. See also the variants ‘Every Day Junior’, ‘Every Day 50+’ and ‘Every Day Mum’.
The optimal form and dosage of B vitamins
The multivitamins for daily use contain B vitamins in
high concentrations, though these are within a range acceptable to the body.
This was based on a careful analysis of daily requirements,
average intake levels and their minimum values
. This takes into account not only the latest
scientific findings and reliable upper limits,
but also the body’s ability to
metabolise the various B vitamins.
Furthermore, all formulations contain the biologically active forms of vitamins B2 (riboflavin-5'-phosphate), B6 (pyridoxal-5'-phosphate), B12 (methyl- and adenosylcobalamin) and folic acid (5-methyltetrahydrofolate glucosamine salt). These are the forms utilised by the body, and research shows that they have higher bioavailability within the body.
Pyridoxal-5'-phosphate as vitamin B6
At very high doses of vitamin B6, a tingling or numbness in the hands or feet may occasionally occur. For this reason, in the Netherlands a maximum safe upper limit for vitamin supplements in adults is set at 21 mg per day . The ‘Every Day Multis’ are well below this (at most 4.2 mg). Furthermore, they contain only pyridoxal-5′-phosphate (P-5′-P), the biologically active form of vitamin B6, is used, not pyridoxine HCl, which still needs to be converted within the body. Further research is currently being carried out to determine whether the aforementioned occasional side effects occur only with vitamin B6 in the form of pyridoxine HCl and not, or to a lesser extent, with pyridoxal-5'-phosphate. Evidence suggests that only pyridoxine HCl is toxic to nerve cells at high doses.
Folic acid as 5-methyltetrahydrofolate
Folic acid (pteroylmonoglutamic acid), which is frequently used in dietary supplements
for stability reasons, is a
synthetic form that does not occur naturally. In food,
it is present as folate. Folic acid derived from
dietary supplements must be converted by the body into
tetrahydrofolate and subsequently into 5-methyltetrahydrofolate
(5-MTHF). Studies show that this complex
conversion process is far from optimal
in a significant number of people. The addition of 5-MTHF
overcomes this problem.
The ‘Every Day Multis’ use the superior form
5-methyltetrahydrofolate, combined with glucosamine salt (under the
brand name Quatrefolic®). Thanks to this combination with plant-derived
glucosamine salt, the biologically active form is kept stable
and optimal absorption is ensured.
Research shows that Quatrefolic® has better
water solubility, stability and bioavailability. 5-MTHF
can also cross the blood-brain barrier, unlike the
‘conventional’ (synthetic) form of folic acid.
Vitamin B12 in the form of adenosyl- and methylcobalamin
The absorption of vitamin B12 from food is a complex
process. Furthermore, there is some evidence to suggest that the NRV
(formerly RDA) of 2.5 µg per day is set too low and that
the requirement for healthy adults and older people
and may exceed 20 µg per day. To ensure the safety
of vitamin B12 supplementation and to take account of the occasionally
difficult absorption of B12 from food as well as
dietary supplements, the
daily multivitamins contain higher doses of the biologically active forms
methyl- and adenosylcobalamin.
Cyanocobalamin, a cheaper, synthetic form of vitamin
B12 that does not occur naturally and must be converted by the body into active forms,
is contained in many other B12 products and
multivitamins. In these, the cyanide component of the
cobalamin (B12) is separated, which the body must then break down
. Studies suggest that the bioavailability of
vitamin B12 in the form of methyl- and adenosylcobalamin is higher
than that of cyanocobalamin.
High levels of vitamin D from plant sources
In recent years, European government bodies
have recognised that the recommended level for an adequate intake of vitamin D via the
diet (15 µg) should be set higher and that the maximum
permitted dose (100 µg) could be increased. In the Netherlands,
there is still some reluctance, and it is suggested that 10 µg
would be sufficient and that the upper limit should be set at 75 µg.
Strangely enough, the NRV (or RDA) still stands at 5 µg. In
the orthomolecular world, however, the importance of higher doses
has long been recognised. Renowned experts
on vitamin D recommend that the calcidiol level in
adults should be at least 75 nmol/l. To maintain
such a vitamin D level, a daily oral
dose of vitamin D3 of approximately 25–75 µg is required.
Multivitamin supplements for daily use contain
high amounts of vitamin D3 (cholecalciferol). Compared to
vitamin D2 (ergocalciferol), this form is significantly more effective at
raising vitamin D levels. Furthermore, the new ‘Every
Day’ multivitamins use plant-based vitamin D3 (Vitamin D3V®). The reason
for this is that it is produced from algae rather than sheep’s wool fat (as is the case with
most vitamin D3 products). This means that all
multivitamins in the ‘Every Day’ range are now also suitable for vegans.
Vitamin K1 and K2
The ‘Jeden Tag’ multivitamins now contain a small
amount of vitamin K1 as well as an increased amount of vitamin K2.
Whilst vitamin K1 is primarily absorbed in the liver and
is responsible in particular for the activation of clotting factors,
vitamin K2 is characterised by higher bioavailability.
It It is distributed much more widely throughout the body’s tissues and therefore
activates other vitamin K-dependent enzymes, such as osteocalcin
and MGP, more effectively. Among other things, these ensure that calcium
is absorbed correctly and reaches the right place – the
bones.
For blood clotting, which is essential for survival,
the body initially uses vitamin K. As vitamin K2 is considerably
more expensive than vitamin K1, a
small amount of K1 is added to multivitamins. This allows K1 to be used for the primary
blood clotting function and K2 for the other, equally
important functions.
Incidentally, the standard NRV for vitamin K is based on the amount
required for normal blood clotting. Strangely enough, the optimal
vitamin K dosage for other bodily processes that depend on this
vitamin has not been taken into account.
Stability of vitamin K2: It appears that vitamin K2 is a
very sensitive substance. The level of this vitamin in a
tablet or capsule decreases particularly rapidly when combined with
calcium and/or magnesium. It presents a real
technical challenge to incorporate vitamin K2 into a product containing
high doses of calcium and/or magnesium. Vitals therefore
uses a K2 supplement under the brand name K2VITAL™ DELTA, which remains stable in a
formula containing many of these minerals. A
patented microencapsulation process protects the fat-soluble
K2 particles with two layers, preventing them from reacting with other ingredients.
Vitals had the stability of K2VITAL™ DELTA tested by an
independent laboratory, and the result was that it
is the best product available. A comparison was carried out with
other brands of vitamin K2, particularly in combination with
the ingredients found in Vitals’ products. It was concluded that K2VITAL™
DELTA was superior to the other K2 ingredients, that the K2 content
remained stable, and that it was absolutely essential to protect the K2.
Natural calcium and magnesium from the sea
The multivitamins now contain calcium and magnesium from the Aquamin® brand, which are sourced from the sea. The tablets thus provide significantly higher doses than the compound forms previously used, whilst the absorption of these ingredients has been proven to be effective.
Aquamin magnesium is extracted from the seawater of the Irish Sea, and research confirms its good bioavailability for the body. In addition to approximately 35% elemental magnesium, the raw material also contains small amounts of other minerals and trace elements.
The calcium (Aquamin Calcium) is derived from the red algae Lithothamnium
calcareum. This species of algae absorbs minerals and
trace elements from the sea and stores them. In
nature, it appears in a beautiful red or pink hue, but
after it dies, it calcifies and takes on a white or
light grey colour. Only calcified red algae originating from the
waters along the Icelandic coast are harvested.
In addition to a calcium content of 32 per cent, the raw material also
contains 3 per cent magnesium, as well as small amounts of other
minerals and trace elements.
Perhaps the synergistic effect of the natural trace element profile of this calcium and magnesium explains the improved absorption and the impressive studies that have been carried out using it.
Iron, zinc and copper in the form of amino acid chelates (bisglycinate)
For the minerals iron, zinc and copper, amino acid chelates (bisglycinates) are used. Each magnesium particle is strongly bound (chelated) to two molecules of the amino acid glycine. Minerals in this compact form reach the small intestine without any problems and are absorbed very effectively there. They are also gentle on the stomach, which can be particularly beneficial in the case of iron. Vitals also carefully selects amino acid chelates from Albion Minerals, which can be recognised by the TRAACS® brand, standing for “The Real Amino Acid Chelate System”. This brand serves to distinguish them from other, potentially inferior or unstable amino acid chelates. Spanning the globe, Albion holds more than 100 patents that safeguard the process, research and structure behind its amino acid chelate minerals .
Unique: Choline in a relatively high dosage
Choline has been used for some time now, more or less as a standard ingredient in multivitamin preparations. However, it has almost always been used in low doses (10 to 30 mg), as very little was known about it. But that is changing more and more! In 2012, the European Commission approved three health claims relating to choline, which apply at a dose of at least 82.5 mg. It is important for normal fat metabolism, homocysteine metabolism and healthy liver function. Based on clinical research, particularly regarding the determination of daily requirements, an RDA of 550 mg/day was established for the first time in the USA in 2016. In 2016, the EFSA concluded that choline is an essential nutrient, but no recommended nutrient values (NRVs) have yet been established. The adequate daily intake was set at 400 mg, based on the average intake in European countries and not on the American study, which yielded a figure of 550 mg/day. The average intake amongst European adults varies between 291 and 468 mg per day. That is reason enough to include a generous dose of choline in a daily multivitamin supplement!
In our multivitamins for daily use, we rely on choline from VitaCholine®. This brand embodies the highest quality, and extensive research has been carried out on it.
Lutein, zeaxanthin and meso-zeaxanthin
Lutein, zeaxanthin and meso-zeaxanthin are among the natural carotenoids. These substances are found in high concentrations in the body, particularly in the retina and the macula lutea (‘yellow spot’). Lutein and zeaxanthin cannot be produced by the body on its own; instead, they must be obtained through the diet. They are found, amongst other things, in green leafy vegetables and in red, yellow and orange fruit and vegetables. Meso-zeaxanthin is found in food only in small quantities (e.g. in prawns, salmon skin, and the skin and flesh of trout). It is primarily produced in the retina through the conversion of lutein via an enzymatic reaction. However, it can be easily taken in the form of supplements. Meso-zeaxanthin has only recently become recognised as an excellent supplement and should be preferred to lutein and zeaxanthin alone.
