One of the most important and thoroughly researched bioflavonoids is quercetin
It is found in various foods, including apples, berries, cabbage and onions. Quercetin is a flavonol that protects plants against insect infestation and micro-organisms, amongst other things. Quercetin in food is glycosidic (bound to sugar). At high temperatures, quercetin partially loses its effectiveness, whether through storage, cooking or peeling. To increase daily quercetin intake, it may be advisable to take a suitable supplement. Like other bioflavonoids, quercetin is known, due to its low water solubility (and consequently also in aqueous digestive juices), to be poorly absorbed by the body. Studies show that quercetin in a homogeneous mixture with phosphatidylcholine (in the phytosomal form) exhibits up to 20 times higher absorption and bioavailability compared to pure quercetin.
Optimised absorption thanks to Phytosome® technology
Quercetin-PS provides quercetin from a natural source. It is derived from the flowers of the honey tree (Sophora japonica). The patented Phytosome® technology from the Italian manufacturer Indena has significantly improved the absorption and bioavailability of quercetin in Quercetin-PS. The term ‘Phytosome’ is derived from the Greek words ‘phuton’ (plant) and ‘soma’ (body). The patented manufacturing process reduces the natural tendency of certain phytonutrients, such as quercetin, to agglomerate and combines them with phospholipids (phosphatidylcholine) derived from sunflower lecithin. The active ingredients are not encapsulated (as in liposomes), but instead form a homogeneous mixture of small, easily absorbable particles. It is true that bioflavonoids (such as quercetin) have a natural affinity for phospholipids. The result is the formation of phytosomes, in which the bioflavonoids bind to the phospholipids. This ensures that they are absorbed particularly well. Cell membranes (such as those of the small intestine cells) are also composed of a phospholipid bilayer. This enables these phytosomes to effectively penetrate the intestinal wall and deliver the active ingredients into the bloodstream. Studies have shown that the absorption and bioavailability of quercetin are increased by a factor of 10 to 20 through this Phytosome® technology.
Unlike with liposome technology, in the case of a liposome, the active ingredient is located inside a particle surrounded by a double layer of phospholipids. The Phytosome® technology provides a truly homogeneous mixture, without the active ingredient being encapsulated. For this reason, the amount of phospholipids required is significantly lower than with liposomes.

Vitals, our new brand from 2025
We are constantly on the lookout for brands that represent our ideals: The highest quality, consistent omission of superfluous additives such as titanium dioxide or porcine gelatine, very good value for money and absolute reliability in delivery to us and therefore also to customers.
This is very difficult because such companies are extremely rare among the mass of manufacturers of food supplements that are now on the market. But we have managed to find them again, with Vitals from the Netherlands!
Manufacturer's address: Vitals Voedingssupplementen BV, Pieter Lieftinckweg 29, 1505 HX Zaandam, Netherlands. E-mail: customer service@vitals.eu.
