R-lipoic acid, also known as alpha-lipoic acid, is a sulphur-containing, vitamin-like fatty acid. Thanks to its water- and fat-soluble properties, alpha-lipoic acid can exert its beneficial effects within cells and cell membranes, in the blood and even in the brain. This essential fatty acid is produced by the body itself and also obtained from food. As it is found predominantly in animal products (particularly red beef), diets that avoid these products may result in reduced intake. This applies, for example, to athletes, vegans or vegetarians.
