Resveratrol helps the plant to withstand external influences and to thrive under unfavourable growing conditions. Resveratrol is the subject of intensive scientific research.  There are around 8,000 published scientific papers on this topic, including over 200 human studies. Resveratrol primarily protects the heart and blood vessels. Resveratrol works in various ways; amongst other things, it promotes good blood circulation. Furthermore, resveratrol is a powerful antioxidant. Resveratrol-VT from Vitals is a product containing highly pure resveratrol in the biologically active trans form (as opposed to the cis form, which has hardly effect). It is produced using a state-of-the-art fermentation process with baker’s yeast (Saccharomyces cerevisiae).

As an antioxidant, resveratrol can help to protect body tissues and cells from oxidative damage.  Its antioxidant effect is based on the fact that resveratrol can donate an electron to a free radical without itself becoming unstable, thereby helping to halt the chain reaction of oxidative damage. (See Fig. 1).  (See Fig. 1). Among other things, this is crucial for maintaining heart health and flexible blood vessels. Resveratrol also promotes cardiovascular health in other ways.  One such way is by promoting blood circulation. Resveratrol supports the production of nitric oxide (NO), a molecule generated in the vessel walls that causes the blood vessels to dilate. Furthermore, resveratrol promotes the the maintenance of healthy mitochondria, thereby supporting cellular energy production in the cardiovascular system . Finally, resveratrol contributes to a balanced immune response, which is important for normal cardiovascular function .

Bioavailability

The body absorbs trans-resveratrol well. However, resveratrol concentrations in the blood are generally low, even though its positive health effects are observed. The answer to this puzzle lies in the further bioactivation of resveratrol, including in the gut.  Trans-resveratrol is absorbed by the enterocytes of the intestinal wall, where it can be readily converted into active metabolites such as trans-resveratrol sulphate and trans-resveratrol glucuronide. The gut microbiota is also involved in the formation these metabolites, which are partly responsible for the effects of resveratrol. For these reasons, resveratrol is highly effective despite its seemingly low bioavailability. The numerous human studies conducted with resveratrol confirm this.

Evolva Veri-te™ is manufactured by Evolva, a Swiss company passionate about combining biochemical processes found in nature with modern and sustainable production methods . In the production of Veri-te™, they employ a yeast fermentation process, in which baker’s yeast is used to produce pure resveratrol. This resveratrol is chemically identical to the natural resveratrol found in Japanese knotweed (Polygonum cuspidatum), but is free from the impurities that are, unfortunately, often found in the plant. An additional advantage of yeast fermentation as a production method is that the final product has a trans-resveratrol content of over 98 per cent .  Several human studies have already been carried out with Veri-te™, and further studies are planned for the future .
