Vitamins, herbs and minerals for the thyroid
Vitals Thyroid Formula Pro contains selenium, which contributes to the normal functioning of the thyroid gland by supporting the production of thyroid hormones. It also contains zinc, which supports hormonal balance. It is well known that the selenium content in the diet has declined in recent decades. This is despite the fact that selenium, amongst other things, plays a fundamental role in the proper functioning of our thyroid gland. The thyroid gland has the highest selenium content in the human body, which is one of the reasons why an adequate selenium intake must be ensured. After all, our bodies cannot produce trace elements such as selenium on their own. The Thyroid Formula Pro also contains myo-inositol, vitamin A, a generous amount of plant-based vitamin D3, and a highly absorbable form of zinc bound to amino acids. Enriched with a highly effective extract of ashwagandha root, marketed under the brand name KSM-66.
Thyroid
The thyroid is a small organ located in the front of the neck. Although the thyroid weighs only around 20 grams, it has a significant influence on body functions. The thyroid gland produces thyroid hormones, which are important for, amongst other things, metabolism, nutrient absorption and metabolism, as well as energy levels. Iodine, a trace element, is known to be a component of thyroid hormones. Selenium also plays a significant role in thyroid function, although this aspect has received considerably less attention.
Selenium
Selenium is one of the essential trace elements. Selenium is found in both animal and plant-based products, in organic forms (such as selenomethionine or selenocysteine) as well as in inorganic forms (such as selenite or selenate). The organic forms are absorbed by the body 1.5 to 2 times more efficiently than the inorganic forms. In Europe, particularly amongst vegetarians, selenium intake is often low. Plant-based foods such as vegetables and bread contain selenium, although the amount depends on the selenium concentration in the soil. Unfortunately, this level is comparatively low in European countries such as Germany and the Netherlands. Selenium is a component of the deiodinase enzymes, which are directly involved in the synthesis of thyroid hormones. The antioxidant effect of selenium is also significant. There are antioxidant enzymes that depend on selenium, such as selenoproteins including glutathione peroxidase (GPx). Free radicals are produced during the synthesis of thyroid hormones in the thyroid gland. GPx neutralises these, thereby helping to maintain healthy thyroid tissue. Selenium also helps to ensure that the immune system functions normally.
Myo-inositol
Inositols comprise nine related compounds found in plant and animal cells. Myo-inositol is the most common form. Myo-inositol is a vitamin-like, water-soluble substance found in foods (such as fruit, vegetables, cereals, pulses, nuts, lecithin, dairy products, eggs, meat, fish and poultry), which is often classified as one of the B vitamins . Myo-inositol is not a vitamin, as the body (particularly the kidneys and liver) can synthesise it itself from glucose. However, it may be beneficial to take myo-inositol as a supplement when the body’s requirements are increased.
Ashwagandha
The herb ashwagandha (Withania somnifera), which is found in India, South Asia, Central Asia and parts of Africa, is becoming increasingly popular in Western countries. In Ayurvedic medicine, ashwagandha has been used for over 4,000 years in various forms, such as tea, syrup, ointment, tincture or powder . A distinctive feature of Ashwagandha is its pronounced adaptogenic effect, which can regulate and stabilise processes within the body and support homeostasis. It also boosts vitality and energy levels. The Ashwagandha extract used by Vitals is sourced from the manufacturer Ixoreal and goes by the brand name KSM-66®. The development of this specialised extract was based on fourteen years of research. With Ashwagandha, it is important that the full spectrum of active compounds from the root is extracted, and not just the withanolides. The effect of the preparation is ultimately based on the synergy between the various components. KSM-66® is obtained using a specially developed extraction process that does not use any toxic or environmentally harmful solvents . This yields a broad-spectrum extract that preserves the natural properties of the original plant. As the ashwagandha leaf contains withaferin A, only the root is used. KSM-66® is not only the highest-quality ashwagandha extract, but also the most thoroughly researched and best scientifically substantiated in the world.
Vitamin A
In the body, vitamin A (retinol) is converted into its active form, retinoic acid. In this form, it is involved in various biochemical and physiological processes within the cells. Vitamin A is important for a properly functioning immune system. It helps to maintain the balance between T-helper cells 1 (Th1) and T-helper cells 2 (Th2) – which is crucial for a balanced immune response. The Thyroid Formula Pro contains a safe amount of vitamin A and does not contain beta-carotene (provitamin A). Therefore, the body does not need to convert beta-carotene into vitamin A.
Vitamin D3V® (vitamin D3)
Vitamin D is a vitamin that does not occur in significant quantities in our diet, but is predominantly synthesised by the skin when exposed to sunlight. This naturally depends on sufficient sunlight, which in countries such as the Netherlands or Germany is by no means guaranteed due to the varying seasons. Furthermore, people are currently spending more time indoors. Vitamin D has an effect on immune modulation. It helps to keep the immune system in balance – neither overactive nor underactive. Vitamin D receptors are found on various cells that play a role in the immune system, such as T-cells. Vitamin D helps the immune system in a variety of ways. In terms of efficacy, the form of vitamin D3 as a dietary supplement is significantly superior to vitamin D2. The Thyroid Formula Pro utilises a novel, plant-based form of algae-based vitamin D3 (vitamin D3V) is used. As a supplement to the body’s own vitamin D production through sun exposure and dietary intake, the Thyroid Formula Pro provides a comprehensive dose of the vitamin.
Zinc (TRAACS)
Zinc helps to maintain normal hormone balance . It also has a positive effect on the maintenance of a normal, balanced immune system. Zinc also helps to protect cells from oxidative damage, partly through its role in the antioxidant enzymes catalase and superoxide dismutase (SOD) Zinc works in conjunction with vitamin A by supporting its normal metabolism. In the Thyroid Formula Pro, zinc is present as bisglycinate. Each mineral particle is firmly bound to two (up to two) molecules of the amino acid glycine (chelated) An amino acid chelate or amino acid-chelated mineral is the generic term for such a compound The term ‘chelate’ originates from Greek and means ‘claw’ This type of compound was chosen because its bioavailability is particularly high. And Vitals uses only genuine amino acid chelates from Albion Minerals, recognisable by the TRAACS® trademark, which stands for The Real Amino Acid Chelate System This ensures that it is indeed a chelate and not merely a combination of a mineral substance and an amino acid, which is mistakenly marketed as an amino acid chelate by some manufacturers.
Why no L-tyrosine or iodine?
Iodine has deliberately not been added to the Thyroid Formula Pro. Iodine is a component of thyroid hormones and therefore plays a significant role in their production. For this reason, one would certainly expect a thyroid formula to contain iodine. However, when supplementing with iodine, particular attention must be paid to the dose. This can quickly shift to either too low or too high a level. It is much easier to offer tailor-made solutions that are adapted to individual iodine levels if a loose iodine supplement for this purpose. The Vitals range includes an organically certified iodine supplement based on knotted kelp: Vitals Iodine Organic L-tyrosine is an amino acid that serves as a component of thyroid hormones. In this context, however, the effects of L-tyrosine supplementation have not yet been sufficiently investigated. Furthermore, taking L-tyrosine as a dietary supplement is usually only beneficial in high doses. These doses would not fit into a single capsule. For this reason, L-tyrosine is not included in Thyroid Formula Pro.
