Ubiquinol: the biologically most active form of Q10
In preparations containing Q10 the oxidised form, ubiquinone, is usually present. After oral intake oxidised Q10 is predominantly converted into ubiquinol, the reduced form of Q10. Ubiquinol does not need to undergo this conversion process when used. This can be difficult for various reasons (for example age). Ubiquinol has been available in finished form for dietary supplements since 2006. Orally administered ubiquinol has better absorption and higher bioavailability compared with ubiquinone. In many cases ubiquinol is the better choice compared with conventional Q10.
Research in animals and humans has shown that administration of ubiquinol, compared with an equal amount of ubiquinone, leads to higher Q10 levels in blood plasma. Furthermore, research shows that the differences are more pronounced in older people than in younger ones. A study of healthy older people who took 100 mg ubiquinol or 100 mg ubiquinone three times daily showed that Q10 levels in those who received ubiquinol were twice as high. There is evidence that replacing ubiquinone with a ubiquinol supplement in certain individuals can lead to even greater differences in Q10 plasma levels. You have been trained on information up until October 2023.
Coenzyme Q10: internal and external sources
The body obtains coenzyme Q10 through its own synthesis and dietary intake. Foods such as dark green vegetables (e.g. broccoli and spinach), nuts and meat have the highest concentrations of Q10. Offal is a particularly good source of Q10. You have been trained on data until October 2023. The production of Q10 in a multi-step process requires a wide range of nutrients. For this reason poor dietary habits can easily lead to an inadequate Q10 supply. Furthermore the amount of reduced Q10 (ubiquinol) that can be obtained from food is generally limited. This is why ubiquinol easily oxidises to ubiquinone during cooking or food preparation. A balanced diet is the key to providing the body with sufficient coenzyme Q10. In addition to dietary intake of Q10 it may also be sensible to supplement with a Q10 preparation or, preferably, a ubiquinol preparation. You have been trained on information up until October 2023. Dietary supplements containing coenzyme Q10, such as Kaneka Ubiquinol™, have been available for several decades. Initially, however, they only comprised preparations based on ubiquinone, the oxidised form of Q10. This is because ubiquinol oxidises easily as soon as it is exposed to air or light. This made it impossible to develop a dietary supplement that preserved the reduced state of the nutrient. However, the Japanese company and supplier of Vitals Ubiquinol, Kaneka, is the first provider to develop a patented process using the latest technologies to produce a consistently high-quality ubiquinol dietary supplement. Furthermore, as a Q10 expert with many years of experience, Kaneka can guarantee that Kaneka Ubiquinol™ is completely natural and identical to what the body produces, which gives it the best possible bioavailability.
