Ubiquinol 100 mg, 60 softgel capsules

Ubiquinol, the biologically most active form of Q10

In Q10 preparations, its oxidised form, ubiquinone, is usually used. After oral administration, oxidised Q10 is largely converted into ubiquinol, the reduced form of Q10. When using ubiquinol this conversion process is not necessary. This can be difficult for various reasons (e.g. with increasing age). Since 2006 ubiquinol has been available in a ready-to-use form for dietary supplements. Orally administered ubiquinol has better absorption and higher bioavailability than ubiquinone. Ubiquinol is the better choice than conventional Q10 in many situations.

Animal and human studies have shown that administration of ubiquinol, compared with an identical amount of ubiquinone, results in higher Q10 levels in blood plasma. In addition, research indicates that the differences are more pronounced in older people than in younger ones. A study in which healthy older subjects received 100 mg ubiquinol or 100 mg ubiquinone three times daily found that Q10 levels in those who had received ubiquinol were twice as high. There is evidence to suggest that, in certain individuals, replacing ubiquinone with a ubiquinol supplement can lead to even greater differences in plasma Q10 values.

Internal and external sources of coenzyme Q10

The body obtains coenzyme Q10 both through its own synthesis and through diet. Dark green vegetables such as broccoli and spinach, nuts and meat are among the foods with the highest concentrations of Q10. Organ meats, in particular, provide a high Q10 content.

The multi-step process by which Q10 is produced requires a wide range of nutrients. Therefore, poor eating habits can easily lead to an inadequate supply of Q10. In addition, the amount of reduced Q10 (ubiquinol) that can be taken in through the daily diet is generally limited. This is because ubiquinol readily oxidises to ubiquinone during food preparation. To ensure an adequate supply of coenzyme Q10, a healthy diet is necessary. In addition to dietary intake of Q10, supplementation with a Q10 product, or better still a ubiquinol product, may be considered.

Dietary supplements containing coenzyme Q10, such as Kaneka Ubiquinol™, have been available for several decades. Initially, however, these products were based exclusively on ubiquinone, the oxidised form of Q10. This is because ubiquinol oxidises easily when exposed to air or light. As a result, insurmountable difficulties arose in attempts to produce a supplement that preserved the reduced form of the nutrient. Kaneka, the Japanese company and supplier of Vitals Ubiquinol, was the first provider to develop a patented process using modern technologies to produce a consistently high-quality ubiquinol dietary supplement. Furthermore, as a Q10 expert with many years of experience, Kaneka can guarantee that Kaneka Ubiquinol™ is completely natural and identical to that found in the body, giving it the highest possible bioavailability.
