Ubiquinol, the biologically most active form of Q10
In Q10 preparations, its oxidised form, ubiquinone, is usually used. After oral administration, oxidised Q10 is largely converted into ubiquinol, the reduced form of Q10. When using ubiquinol this conversion process is not necessary. This can be difficult for various reasons (e.g. with age). Since 2006, ubiquinol has been available in ready-to-use form for dietary supplements. Orally administered ubiquinol has better absorption and higher bioavailability than ubiquinone. Ubiquinol is in many situations a better choice than conventional Q10.
Animal and human studies have shown that administration of ubiquinol, compared with an identical amount of ubiquinone, results in higher Q10 levels in blood plasma. In addition, research shows that the differences are more pronounced in older people than in younger ones. A study in which healthy older individuals received 100 mg ubiquinol or 100 mg ubiquinone three times daily found that the Q10 content in those who had received ubiquinol was twice as high. There is evidence to suggest that in certain individuals replacing ubiquinone with a ubiquinol supplement may lead to even greater differences in Q10 plasma values.
Internal and external coenzyme Q10 sources
The body obtains coenzyme Q10 both through its own synthesis and through dietary intake. Dark green vegetables such as broccoli and spinach, nuts and meat are among the foods with the highest concentrations of Q10. In particular, organ meats provide a high proportion of Q10.
A wide range of nutrients is required to produce Q10 via a multi-step process. Therefore, poor eating habits can easily lead to an inadequate supply of Q10. In addition, the amount of reduced Q10 (ubiquinol) that can be obtained from the daily diet is generally limited. This is because ubiquinol easily oxidises to ubiquinone during food preparation. A healthy diet is necessary to provide the body with sufficient coenzyme Q10. In addition to dietary intake of Q10, supplementation with a Q10 product or, even better, a ubiquinol product may be considered.
Dietary supplements containing coenzyme Q10, such as Kaneka Ubiquinol™, have existed for several decades. Initially, however, these products were based exclusively on ubiquinone, the oxidised form of Q10. This is because ubiquinol easily oxidises when exposed to air or light. As a result, insurmountable difficulties arose when it came to producing a dietary supplement that preserved the reduced state of the nutrient. Kaneka, the Japanese company and supplier of Vitals Ubiquinol, was however the first provider to develop, using modern technologies, a patented process to produce a qualitatively consistent ubiquinol dietary supplement. Furthermore, as a Q10 expert with many years of experience, Kaneka can guarantee that Kaneka Ubiquinol™ is completely natural and identical to that found in the body, giving it the highest possible bioavailability.
