Ubiquinol 50 mg, 60 softgel capsules

Ubiquinol, the most biologically active form of Q10

Supplements containing Q10 usually use its oxidised form, ubiquinone. After oral ingestion, oxidised Q10 is largely converted into ubiquinol, the reduced form of Q10.  When using ubiquinol, this conversion process is not necessary. This conversion can be difficult for various reasons (e.g. with advancing age). Since 2006, ubiquinol has been available in a ready-to-use form for dietary supplements.  Ubiquinol, when administered orally, is better absorbed and has higher bioavailability than ubiquinone. Ubiquinol is a better choice than conventional Q10 in many situations.

Animal and human studies have shown that the administration of ubiquinol results in higher Q10 levels in blood plasma compared with an identical amount of ubiquinone. Furthermore, research indicates that the differences are more pronounced in older people than in younger individuals.  A study in which healthy older adults received 100 mg of ubiquinol or 100 mg of ubiquinone three times a day found that the CoQ10 levels in those who had received ubiquinol were twice as high.  Evidence suggests that, in certain individuals, switching from ubiquinone to an ubiquinol supplement may lead to even greater differences in plasma Q10 levels.

Internal and external sources of coenzyme Q10

The body obtains coenzyme Q10 both through its own synthesis and through dietary intake.   Dark green vegetables such as broccoli and spinach, nuts and meat are among the foods with the highest concentrations of Q10. In particular, offal provides a high proportion of Q10.

Producing Q10 through a multi-stage process requires a wide range of nutrients. Consequently, poor dietary habits can easily lead to an insufficient intake of Q10.  Furthermore, the amount of reduced Q10 (ubiquinol) that can be obtained through the daily diet is generally limited. This is because ubiquinol is easily oxidised to ubiquinone during food preparation.  To ensure the body has an adequate supply of coenzyme Q10, a healthy diet is essential. In addition to obtaining Q10 from food, supplementation with a Q10 preparation or, better still, an ubiquinol preparation may also be considered.

Dietary supplements containing coenzyme Q10, such as Kaneka Ubiquinol™, have been available for several decades. Initially, however, these were exclusively preparations based on ubiquinone, the oxidised form of Q10.  This is because ubiquinol oxidises easily when exposed to air or light. Consequently, insurmountable difficulties arose when it came to producing a dietary supplement that preserved the reduced state of the nutrient.  Kaneka, the Japanese company and supplier of Vitals Ubiquinol, was however the first supplier to use modern technologies to develop a patented process for producing a consistently high-quality ubiquinol dietary supplement.  Furthermore, as a CoQ10 expert with many years’ experience, Kaneka can guarantee that Kaneka Ubiquinol™ is completely natural and identical to the body’s own, thereby offering the highest possible bioavailability.
