4,000 IU of vitamin A in its pure form, retinyl palmitate
Fortunately, softgel capsules are no longer produced solely from animal gelatine. There are now plant-based alternatives, such as tapioca starch from cassava. This makes Vitals’ Vitamin A 4000 IU also ideal for vegetarians and vegans.
Vitamin A: the multifunctional vitamin for the skin, eyes and immune system
Vitamin A plays an important role in numerous bodily functions. It supports cell development so that cells can perform their specific tasks correctly, for example in the skin and the mucous membranes of the gut and lungs. Vitamin A is also essential for eye health. Among other things, it helps you to see clearly even in the dark. Furthermore, vitamin A helps to maintain normal fluid balance in the eye and promotes healthy function of the cornea. Vitamin A is also important for the proper and balanced functioning of the immune system. It also helps the body to make iron from its own stores more readily available – an important prerequisite for maintaining good iron levels in the blood.
Difference between vitamin A (retinol) and provitamin A (beta-carotene)
Two forms of vitamin A, beta-carotene and retinol, are found in dietary supplements. Beta-carotene is known as provitamin A, as the body must convert it into vitamin A. Beta-carotene has the advantage that its conversion within the body is regulated in such a way that too much vitamin A is never produced.
However, there is also a disadvantage: the conversion of beta-carotene into vitamin A is not always efficient. This means there is no certainty as to the amount of vitamin A one ultimately obtains from beta-carotene. In situations where there is an additional need for vitamin A, it may be advisable to choose a dietary supplement containing readily available retinol. Prenatal vitamins sometimes also contain a mixture of retinol and beta-carotene.
Important to note: In Belgium and the Netherlands, the vitamin A (retinol) content in dietary supplements is legally limited to 1200 µg per day, as this amount is also safe for pregnant women. The product ‘Vitamin A 4000 IE’ from Vitals offers this safe dosage of 1200 µg of retinyl palmitate per vegan softgel capsule. This is a stable compound of retinol and a fatty acid, which ensures that the vitamin A is better preserved and works optimally.
