Vitamin A is also fundamental for the eyes. It helps, among other things, to see sharply in low light. It also helps to maintain a normal fluid balance in the eye and promotes the healthy function of the cornea. Vitamin A is also important for the correct and balanced functioning of the immune system. In addition, it helps the body to make iron from its own stores more readily available – an important prerequisite for a good iron level in the blood.

Difference between vitamin A (retinol) and provitamin A (beta-carotene)

Two forms of vitamin A, beta-carotene and retinol, are included in food supplements. Beta-carotene is called provitamin A because the body must convert it into vitamin A. Beta-carotene has the advantage that its conversion in the body is regulated so that too much vitamin A is never produced.

However, there is also a disadvantage: the conversion of beta-carotene into vitamin A is not always efficient. This means there is no certainty about how much vitamin A you ultimately obtain from beta-carotene. In situations where an additional need for vitamin A exists, it can be sensible to choose a supplement with readily available retinol. Pregnancy vitamins sometimes use a mixture of retinol and beta-carotene.
