P5P is the active form that the body needs.
All Vitals products containing vitamin B6 use
exclusively the biologically active form, pyridoxal-5′-phosphate
(P5P), whilst pyridoxine HCl, which must first
be converted in the body, is not used. The
biologically active vitamin B6 in the form of pyridoxal-5′-phosphate is
involved as a cofactor in over 140 enzymatic reactions in the body and
thus fulfils various physiological functions. For
their metabolism, almost all amino acids require one or
more enzymes that depend on pyridoxal-5′-phosphate.
P5P-dependent enzymes are also important in glycogen metabolism. Vitamin B6 therefore contributes to
a good energy supply and can help with fatigue.
Pyridoxal-5′-phosphate is also involved in the synthesis of
haem compounds and haemoglobin and plays a role
in the binding and release of oxygen in red
blood cells. Haem compounds are also present
in the mitochondria, which explains the influence of pyridoxal-5′-phosphate on
energy levels. As pyridoxal-5′-phosphate is taken up by the brain
and P5P-dependent enzymes are involved in the synthesis of
neurotransmitters, it contributes to the normal functioning
of the brain and nerves.
Vitamin B6 is also important for the immune system, as it is required as a
coenzyme in the production of certain immunoglobulins
(antibodies that fight viruses or bacteria) and cytokines
(substances that activate or inhibit the immune system)
. It is also involved in the synthesis of cysteine and in the
formation and metabolism of homocysteine. Vitamin B6 also has a regulatory effect on
hormonal activity.
Reliable upper limit
Very high doses of vitamin B6 can occasionally cause
tingling or numbness in the hands or feet. For
this reason, the maximum safe
upper limit for vitamin supplements in adults in the Netherlands is set at 21 mg per day
. Research is currently being carried out to determine whether these
occasional side effects occur only with vitamin B6 in the form of
pyridoxine HCl and not, or to a lesser extent, with
pyridoxal-5′-phosphate. Evidence suggests that only
pyridoxine is toxic to nerve cells at high doses, whilst
P5P does not appear to be. The Vitals product
called ‘Vitamin B6 Pyridoxal-5'-Phosphate’ contains a
high dose (20 mg) of this active ingredient in its pure,
biologically active form. The active ingredient is contained in a
vegetable capsule made from cassava and is supplemented with a
rice-based excipient.
