Vitamin C 1000 mg, 100 tablets

High-dose vitamin C + bioflavonoids for improved absorption

The product contains an enrichment of bioflavonoids from citrus fruits and rosehips. Excellent as part of a daily basic supplement. If a higher requirement arises, more than one tablet per day may be taken temporarily.

Bioflavonoids

Bioflavonoids are water-soluble compounds that, together with vitamin C, are mainly found in fresh fruit and vegetables. Bioflavonoids act synergistically with vitamin C. They contribute to the bioavailability of vitamin C.

Effects of vitamin C

Vitamin C is one of the most frequently mentioned vitamins and is particularly known for its positive influence on the immune system. And that is true. The immune system is supported by vitamin C, especially during intense physical exercise or in cold environments. However, this vitamin is also involved in a wide range of processes.

In the body, vitamin C acts as a water-soluble antioxidant and is crucial for combating free radicals. It is part of a complex system of endogenous antioxidants, dietary antioxidants and antioxidant enzymes, which are mutually dependent and interact with one another. In this role it protects DNA, proteins and fats from oxidative damage and thus helps to maintain healthy cells and tissues. In addition, vitamin C is required as a coenzyme for three different enzymes involved in the production of collagen (the most abundant structural protein in the human body). Normal collagen formation is important, among other things, for bones, cartilage, gums, skin, tendons and blood vessels.

Vitamin C is needed as a cofactor for dopamine beta-monooxygenase (DBM), the enzyme that converts dopamine into noradrenaline and adrenaline. Both act as neurotransmitters and hormones in the body, so vitamin C's influence on nervous system function and its role in normal psychological function can be regarded as beneficial. Two enzymes involved in the synthesis of carnitine — a molecule required for the transport of long-chain fatty acids into the mitochondria for energy production — depend on vitamin C.

Thus vitamin C contributes to energy levels. It can also be helpful for tiredness. Furthermore, many people do not consume sufficient iron in their diet — especially women of childbearing age, pregnant women and (young) children. Dietary iron absorption is enhanced by vitamin C. This concerns non-haem iron, which occurs in both plant and animal foods. The absorption of haem iron, which occurs only in animal products, is not affected by vitamin C. Around 90% of the iron in the diet is non-haem iron. Haem iron accounts for only 10%. Vitamin C can act as an electron donor to convert oxidised vitamin E back into its active, reduced form and thus preserve the effect of vitamin E.

As the human body is unable to produce vitamin C, it relies on intake from the diet.

Nutritional properties

  • Vitamin C contributes to the normal function of the immune system during and after intense physical exercise (this effect is only obtained with an additional intake of 200 mg vitamin C).
  • Vitamin C contributes to normal collagen formation for the normal function of blood vessels, bones and cartilage, as well as skin and teeth.
  • Vitamin C contributes to a normal energy-yielding metabolism, contributes to the normal function of the nervous system and to normal psychological function, and to the reduction of tiredness and fatigue.
  • Vitamin C contributes to normal immune system function and increases iron absorption.
  • Vitamin C contributes to the regeneration of the reduced form of vitamin E and helps to protect cells from oxidative stress.

This is very difficult because such companies are extremely rare among the mass of dietary supplement manufacturers now on the market. But we have once again managed to find one with Vitals from the Netherlands!
