Vitamin D3 3000 IU, 100 softgel capsules

Cholecalciferol – the most effective form of vitamin D

High doses of vitamin D have been recognised in the orthomolecular world for quite some time. In recent years, however, a wealth of conclusive research findings has led to an increasing number of (renowned) experts (scientists, professors and doctors) strongly recommending vitamin D supplementation.

This product contains 75 µg of vitamin D3 (cholecalciferol), equivalent to 3000 IU (international units), derived from sheep’s wool fat. The vitamin D3 softgel capsules (3000 IU) are a high-dose dietary supplement designed to support the body’s own production through sunlight and dietary intake. It is best to have your vitamin D levels tested and to adjust the dosage according to your blood test results.

Vitamin D3 has the most pronounced effect.

The most common forms of vitamin D (calciferol) are vitamin D2 (ergocalciferol) and vitamin D3 (cholecalciferol). Under the the influence of UV light, such as that emitted by the sun, the human body produces cholecalciferol in the skin (which is why it is also known as the ‘sunshine vitamin’). In the liver, these forms of vitamin D are converted into calcidiol (25-hydroxyvitamin D), a metabolite. In the kidneys as well as in other cells and tissues, calcidiol is converted, as required, into the biologically active hormone calcitriol (1,25-dihydroxyvitamin D). As far as dietary supplements are concerned, however, it is important to note that vitamin D3 appears to be more effective than vitamin D2 in most cases when it comes to increasing calcidiol and, ultimately, calcitriol levels in the blood.

Vitamin D requirements

Although the skin can produce vitamin D, this does not work properly for many Europeans. It is necessary to spend at least 15 to 30 minutes outdoors every day between 11 am and 3 pm. However, many people have jobs that mean they are indoors during precisely these hours. Furthermore, the weather is often unfavourable. When people do go out into the sun with exposed skin, they soon apply sun cream. Furthermore, the sun’s intensity is insufficient between November and May. Consequently, vitamin D production and intake through diet are inadequate for most people (particularly during these months). Many vitamin D experts also believe that the optimal vitamin D level is higher than that specified in current recommendations. In their view, everyone’s calcidiol level should be at least 75 nanomoles per litre of blood (nmol/l), whilst the Dutch Health Council, for example, considers a level of 30 nmol/l (or 50 nmol/l from the age of 70) to be sufficient. This forms the basis for the reference values for nutrition as well as the recommendations for vitamin D supplementation.

The effect of vitamin D in the body

Over the past few decades, our understanding of the role and importance of vitamin D in the human body has increased considerably. Researchers have discovered receptors for vitamin D in over 30 different tissues and organs, including immune cells, muscles and bones. researchers have discovered receptors for vitamin D. This means that vitamin D exerts a wide range of effects and promotes health in many different ways. Above all, it is well known that vitamin D is good for teeth and bones. Vitamin D is essential for the absorption of calcium and phosphorus from food, as well as for maintaining normal blood levels of these two nutrients. These minerals, in turn, are necessary for the mineralisation of teeth and bones. Vitamin D is also beneficial for the muscles, as muscle tissue also contains a vitamin D receptor. Its activation increases protein production in the muscles, which is essential for their function. Furthermore, vitamin D plays a role in the process of cell division and in the regeneration of cells and tissues. Vitamin D also has an immunomodulatory effect, meaning it regulates processes within the immune system. T-helper cells, a type of white blood cell that plays a crucial role in certain immunological processes, possess vitamin D receptors. In this way, vitamin D plays a multifaceted role in our complex immune system.
